My family and I put on Van Morrison&#8217;s &#8220;Dancing in the Moonlight,&#8221; and sat on the lawn watching the special eclipse this past weekend. It was a special experience and, apparently, one that won&#8217;t occur again until 2033. Check out the picture we\u00a0took of the eclipse above.<\/p>\n<p>While watching the full moon, my husband and I told stories about <em>l<\/em>e<em>s loups-garous<\/em>, or werewolves, to our son. <em>On ne voulait pas lui faire peur<\/em>&#8211;we didn&#8217;t want to scare him, only entertain him. There are many old French tales, or\u00a0<em>contes,\u00a0<\/em>about werewolves, some of them more playful and some downright scary. In Quebecois literature especially,\u00a0<em>les loups-garous\u00a0<\/em>have a rich tradition. Sometimes known as\u00a0<em>rougarous<\/em>, werewolves in the French Canadian tradition are linked with both Catholic religious and superstitious traditions. According to some stories, Catholics can be transformed into <em>loups-garous\u00a0<\/em>if they break Lent seven years in a row! This transformation could last for 101 days, according to folklore, or until someone recognized the transformed werewolf and drew their blood.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph Gagn\u00e9 at\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/curieusenouvellefrance.blogspot.com\/2011\/09\/gare-au-loup-garou-de-quebec.html\">Curieuse Nouvelle-France<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>has done some archival work into both Quebecois\u00a0myths about\u00a0<em>les loups garous\u00a0<\/em>and news accounts from the 18th century. In &#8220;Gare au loup-garou de Qu\u00e9bec!&#8221; (or &#8220;Beware of the Werewolf from Quebec!&#8221;), he includes an excerpt from a 1766 article in the\u00a0<em>Gazette de Quebec:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>L\u2019on apprend de St. Roch, pr\u00e8s du Cap Mouraska, qu\u2019il y a un Loup garou qui court les c\u00f4tes sous la forme d\u2019un Mendiant; qui, avec le talent de persuader ce qu\u2019il ignore, et en promettant ce qu\u2019il ne peut tenir, a celui d\u2019obtenir ce qu\u2019il d\u00e9mande. On dit que cet Animal, avec le secours de ses deux pieds de derri\u00e9re, arriva \u00e0 Qu\u00e9bec le 17 dernier, et qu\u2019il en repartit le 18 suivant, dans le dessein de suivre sa mission jusques \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al. Cette b\u00eate est, dit-on, dans son espece, aussi dang\u00e9reuse que celle qui parut l\u2019ann\u00e9e derni\u00e9re dans le G\u00e9vaudan; c\u2019est pourquoi l\u2019ont exhorte le public de s\u2019en m\u00e9fier comme d\u2019un Loup Ravissant.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What do you think?
