Continuing this week with another post in the confusing<\/a> pairs<\/a> series, today\u00a0we\u2019re going to look at 2 little words that can have 10 English meanings. Their usage overlaps in some cases, so it\u2019s very\u00a0easy to mix the two up. <\/span><\/p>\n

Si vous n\u2019avez pas encore devin\u00e9 les 2 mots <\/b>(If you haven\u2019t already guessed the 2 words), allow me to tell you: I\u2019m referring to the adverbs encore<\/b> and toujours<\/b>. These 2 words can mean\u00a0again, always, another, anyhow, anyway, at least, even, more, still, and yet in English. We\u2019re going to look at each word individually and then together to see which one to use when their meanings overlap.<\/span><\/p>\n

Encore<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Encore in English can be translated as again even, another, and more (also yet and still – but those are below in their own section).<\/span><\/p>\n

Toujours in English can be translated as always and anyhow, anyway, and at least (also yet and still – but those are below in their own section).<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Karine est toujours occup\u00e9e.

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Anyway\/Anyhow\/At least
\n<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0C\u2019est cher, mais \u00e7a sera toujours utile.
\n<\/b><\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0It\u2019s expensive, but it\u2019ll be useful, anyway. <\/span><\/p>\n

Encore vs. Toujours<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

And now the fun part. I mean, if you like grammar, anyway. But this isn\u2019t bad! Encore and toujours can both mean yet and still, but one or the other may be used depending on the environment. Let\u2019s take a look.<\/span><\/p>\n

Still<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

This word can be translated as toujours<\/b> and encore<\/b>, though toujours<\/b> is more accurate. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Je suis toujours au bureau.
\n<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m still at the office.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Je suis encore au bureau. <\/b>
\n\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m still at the office. * BUT ALSO<\/i> I\u2019m at the office again.
\n\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span> *This helps to explain why toujours is a bit more accurate.<\/i><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s take a closer look\u00a0<\/span>at how using encore <\/b>instead of toujours <\/b>can imply slightly different things. Let\u2019s look at the very simple sentence \u201cIl pleut\u201d with one of the adverbs thrown in there.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Il pleut encore<\/b> can mean it rained but it stopped before raining again.
\n\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Il pleut toujours can mean it\u2019s still raining (meaning it hasn\u2019t stopped)<\/span><\/p>\n

Use encore <\/b>if you’re modifying an adjective (quoi??? <\/b>a word used to describe or qualify a person, place, thing, or idea). <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Il est encore plus grand que ma taille.
\n<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>He\u2019s still taller than I am. <\/span><\/p>\n

Yet<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re using \u201cyet\u201d in a <\/span>negative<\/span> context but it\u2019s still interchangeable with “still,” you\u2019ll want to use toujours pas<\/b> or pas encore<\/b> (note that toujours<\/b> is before the pas<\/b>!). If you want to use \u201cyet\u201d in a positive sense (as in: Have you tried this cocktail yet?), you\u2019ll want to use d\u00e9j\u00e0<\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n
