{"id":22562,"date":"2015-10-19T22:46:21","date_gmt":"2015-10-19T20:46:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/?p=22562"},"modified":"2017-10-24T12:01:40","modified_gmt":"2017-10-24T10:01:40","slug":"super-scary-superlatives-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/super-scary-superlatives-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Super Scary&#8230;Superlatives (2)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/?p=22545\">Last week<\/a>, I went over French superlatives using the formula\u00a0<strong>le\/la\/les + plus\/moins + adjective\/adverb,\u00a0<\/strong>as well as some irregular superlative forms (<strong>le\/la meilleur\/e<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>To use the superlative form of <em>bon<\/em> in order to say that something\u00a0is &#8220;the best,&#8221; you would use\u00a0<strong>le\/la meilleur(e).\u00a0<\/strong>For example:\u00a0Notre-Dame de Paris<em> est le <strong>meilleur <\/strong>livre de Victor Hugo. (<\/em><em>The Hunchback of Notre Dame\u00a0<\/em>is Victor Hugo&#8217;s <strong>best <\/strong>book.) However, if you want to say that something is &#8220;the worst,&#8221;, you would use\u00a0<strong>le\/la pire.\u00a0<\/strong>For example: <em>C&#8217;\u00e9tait la <strong>pire<\/strong> journ\u00e9e de ma vie!<\/em> (It was the <strong>worst<\/strong> day of my life!). Notice how the masculine and feminine form of the word <em>pire<\/em> is the same, although you still need to remember to accord the article with the noun.<\/p>\n<p>Using the superlative\u00a0<em>pire<\/em>, I want to transition to talking about\u00a0<strong>comparatives.\u00a0<\/strong>Comparatives are comparisons between two or more nouns, focusing on quality, quantity, or degree.\u00a0<strong>Superlatives\u00a0<\/strong>are a kind of comparative that\u00a0signify the greatest degree of something.<\/p>\n<p>If the superlative &#8220;the worst&#8221; uses the formula\u00a0<strong>le\/la pire<em>\u00a0+\u00a0<\/em>noun,\u00a0<\/strong>the simple comparative uses the following formula:\u00a0<strong>pire + que<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The following is a common French expression that uses the formula\u00a0<strong>pire + que:\u00a0<\/strong><em><span lang=\"FR\">Le rem\u00e8de est <\/span><strong><span lang=\"FR\">pire<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"FR\"><strong> que<\/strong> le mal. (<\/span><\/em><span lang=\"FR\">The remedy is <strong>worse<\/strong> than the disease.) Notice how in this comparative form there is no article (le\/la) preceding\u00a0<em>pire.\u00a0<\/em>If you said, <em>ce rem\u00e8de est le pire rem\u00e8de disponsible et le moins efficace. (<\/em>This remedy is the <strong>worst<\/strong> available remedy and the least effective.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The comparative and superlative forms of <em>bien<\/em>\u00a0(&#8220;good,&#8221; as an adverb) work in a similar way. Like <em>bon<\/em> and <em>meilleur(e)<\/em>, <em>bien<\/em>\u00a0becomes\u00a0<em>mieux<\/em>\u00a0in comparative form (it is also an irregular comparative form).<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Thus,\u00a0<strong><em>le\/la mieux +\u00a0<\/em>noun<\/strong> is the superlative form and\u00a0<strong><em>mieux\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0<em>mieux +\u00a0<\/em>que<\/strong> is the simple comparative form.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some examples<\/p>\n<p><em>Il a jou\u00e9 <strong>mieux<\/strong> aujourd&#8217;hui <strong>qu<\/strong>&#8216;hier.
