Having just come back<\/a> to France, after getting over la fatigue<\/strong> \u00e0 cause du d\u00e9calage horaire<\/strong> (the jetlag<\/a>), there’s been many meetings catching up on what happened while I was away. That means I\u2019ve had to imprimer<\/strong> (print) many documents, and has led to me realizing that I don\u2019t know how to talk about les imprimantes<\/strong> (printers) in French!<\/p>\n

A few days ago I needed to imprimer<\/strong> something, but mon imprimante<\/strong> was out of de l’encre<\/strong> (ink). Ce n’est pas la fin du monde<\/strong> (It’s the end of the world), I could just go to l’imprimerie<\/strong> (the printer’s, printing store) and l’imprimer<\/strong> (print it) there before the meeting. The first surprise of the day happened when I didn\u2019t realize what time the store opened<\/a>!<\/p>\n

After rushing around finding une imprimeire ouverte<\/strong> (an open printing store), I then had to explain why I was late, which meant fumbling around mixing up the words for l’imprimante<\/strong> and l’imprimerie<\/strong>, and not remembering if the verb for print<\/em> is imprimer<\/strong> or imprimier<\/em>. Worst of all, I didn’t know how to say de l’encre<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

My confusing phrasing led to une r\u00e9ponse sarcastique<\/strong> (a sarcastic response):<\/p>\n

\u00ab Ah, oui, les probl\u00e8mes techniques\u2026. \u00bb<\/strong>
\nAh, yes, technical problems\u2026.<\/em><\/p>\n

The feeling of being unable to effectively communicate is horrible, but it made me go home and look up how to talk about les imprimantes<\/strong>, and when I needed to buy de l’encre<\/strong>, I had no problem saying,<\/p>\n

\u00ab Ma cartouche noire est vide. \u00bb<\/strong>
\nMy black ink cartridge is empty (my printer is out of black ink).<\/em><\/p>\n

There are always new words and new situations that are impossible to predict. Have any of you ever been in a situation where you just didn\u2019t have the vocabulary to explain your problem?<\/p>\n
