Every year, new words are added to dictionaries around the world. Normally, these words are added due to new technological advances or cultural phenomena that describe what life is like in this new year. In France, it’s not only verbs, adjectives, nouns, and adverbs that are added…but also proper names. This is an honor that shows that a person has achieved a certain amount of fame and recognition. For 2016, the people\u00a0to be included in French dictionaries are: the philosopher Bernard Henri-L\u00e9vy, the patissier Pierre Herm\u00e9, the French actor Pierre Richard, and the British actor Michael Caine.<\/p>\n

According to this article<\/a>, there are two requirements for inclusion in the popular French dictionaries, Le Petit Rousse and Le Petit Robert: “Chaque nouvelle entr\u00e9e a d\u00fb respecter, comme pour les \u00e9ditions pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes, l’un des deux crit\u00e8res suivants: \u00eatre populaire et souvent repris dans les m\u00e9dias mais aussi \u00eatre en rapport avec l’actualit\u00e9 sans risquer de dispara\u00eetre rapidement.”<\/p>\n

Here are some more words to be included for 2016 (some are self-explanatory):<\/p>\n

  1. selfie<\/li>\n
  2. vegan<\/li>\n
  3. boloss(e) (slang–an insult meaning that someone is silly or stupid)<\/li>\n
  4. baltringue (slang–a coward)<\/li>\n
  5. sape (slang–clothes)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    And some expressions:<\/p>\n

    1. partir en cacahu\u00e8te (“going peanuts,” means that something is going wrong\/badly)<\/li>\n
    2. tendu comme un string (“tight as a string,” means someone is very stressed)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      “Ces dictionnaires se veulent aussi le reflet de leur soci\u00e9t\u00e9, parfois m\u00eame de l’actualit\u00e9 (c’est sans doute pourquoi Le Robert admet d\u00e9sormais le terme de \u00abzadiste\u00bb). Ils suivent aussi une tendance, comme, par exemple la f\u00e9minisation des noms. Au sein de ces r\u00e9dactions du Larousse et du Robert qui se penchent chaque ann\u00e9e, comme dans un conseil d’administration, sur l’utilit\u00e9 ou non d’int\u00e9grer un nouveau mot, on nous a affirm\u00e9 que c’est suivre l’usage que de f\u00e9miniser car il faut tenir compte du fait que de plus en plus de femmes acc\u00e8dent aux postes traditionnellement tenus par des hommes.       These dictionaries also want to reflect their society, sometimes even current events (and it’s without a doubt why Le Robert will, from now on, include the word “zadiste”). They follow current styles, too, like, for example, the feminization of names. Within the editions of Larousse and Robert, as with a board of directors, where they\u00a0must decide on the usefulness of incorporating a new word or not, they have told us that they are following the usage of feminization because they must take into account the fact that more and more women hold jobs traditionally held by men. Both dictionaries utilize what we call a “word bank” taken from newspapers or books, and their choices are guided by the list of instances brought in by their observation of the contemporary French language.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
