After living in France for several years I still learn new words and phrases every day. Whether it\u2019s figuring out how to buy un tournevis<\/strong><\/a> (a screwdriver) or making mistakes<\/a>, there\u2019s a lesson to be learned.<\/p>\n

The same week I wrote about l\u2019argent<\/a><\/strong> (money) I attended a meeting where I heard un nouveau mot<\/strong> (a new word):<\/p>\n

On a fil\u00e9 la thune au mec.<\/strong>
\n …Attendez, qu\u2019est-ce que c\u2019est la thune ?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We gave la thune<\/em> to the guy.
\n…Wait, what is la thune<\/em>?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It came up while talking about le financement<\/strong> and le budget<\/strong>. I was pretty sure it was connected to l\u2019argent<\/strong>, but I was not s\u00fbr \u00e0 cent pour cent <\/strong>(100 percent sure). I thought they might be using the English word tune<\/em> in some way I could not understand! My question was met with some playful laughter as everyone realized I didn\u2019t understand l\u2019argot <\/strong>(the slang).<\/p>\n

C\u2019est l\u2019argent !<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s money!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

After the meeting I looked up le mot<\/strong> and found that la thune<\/strong> was originally 5 francs<\/em>, but is now sometimes used as a general term for l’argent<\/strong>. I am s\u00fbr \u00e0 cent percent<\/strong> that there will always be something new to learn here in France!<\/p>\n

Voici un petit vocabulaire de l\u2019argent en argot :
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Des balles \u2013 Bucks, quid
\nDes piasses \u2013 Bucks, quid (in Canada<\/a>)
\nDes sous \u2013 Money, change
\nLa thune, le fric, la flouze \u2013 Money<\/p>\n

There are also more specific words that en th\u00e9orie<\/strong> (in theory) are not used anymore in countries that use the Euro, and change meaning depending on if it is referring to des anciens ou nouveaux francs<\/strong> (old or new francs). However, it is still possible to come across ces mots<\/strong> (these words):<\/p>\n

Une brique, une plaque, une patate \u2013 10 000 francs
\nUn sac \u2013 10 francs
\nUne thune \u2013 5 francs
\nUn rond \u2013 1 franc
\nUn sou \u2013 10 cents<\/p>\n
