{"id":22978,"date":"2016-02-24T20:10:03","date_gmt":"2016-02-24T19:10:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/?p=22978"},"modified":"2017-10-24T15:38:50","modified_gmt":"2017-10-24T13:38:50","slug":"22978-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/22978-2\/","title":{"rendered":"French Music &#8211; Jazz Manouche"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When people think of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/the-best-french-music-of-2015\/\">French music<\/a>, they often think of one of the more famous <strong>chanteurs<\/strong> (singers) like <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/edith-piaf-la-vie-en-rose\/\">Edith Piaf<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/jacques-brel-quand-on-a-que-lamour-when-we-have-nothing-but-love\/\">Jacques Brel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But what else is there?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Le jazz<\/strong> is one of the most famous <strong>styles de musique<\/strong> (styles of music) in the world.\u00a0 It made its way from New Orleans all the way to Orl\u00e9ans, but <strong>une fois en France<\/strong> (once in France), <strong>le jazz<\/strong> underwent an interesting transformation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Le jazz <\/strong>became <strong>le jazz manouche<\/strong>, <strong>un style de musique <\/strong>pioneered by <em>Django Reinhardt<\/em> in the 1930s that mixes <strong>le jazz<\/strong> with <strong>le musette<\/strong> (traditional French dance music) and the music of the Romani people, or as they are often called, <strong>les tziganes<\/strong> (gypsies).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Le musette<\/strong> is <strong>un style de musique<\/strong> I had heard before, but did not know the name.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00c9coutez cette chanson courte<\/strong> (listen to this short song) and get a taste of <strong>le musette <\/strong>and see if you recognize<strong> le style<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nKcSLDZrILE\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nKcSLDZrILE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first time I heard someone say <em><strong>jazz manouche<\/strong><\/em>, my response was:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Qu\u2019est-ce que c\u2019est \u00ab <em>manouche<\/em> \u00bb ?<\/strong><br \/>\nWhat is &#8220;<em>manouche&#8221;<\/em>?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I quickly learned that <em><strong>manouche<\/strong> <\/em>is a word for <em>gypsy<\/em> and <strong>le jazz manouche<\/strong> is called <em>gypsy jazz<\/em> in English.<\/p>\n<p>I also met one of my best friends here in France by talking to <strong>le guitariste d&#8217;un groupe de jazz manouche<\/strong> (the guitarist of a gypsy jazz group) after a concert. I recently interviewed him for a future article!
