When ordering something in a new country there are always surprises waiting in all the small differences from what you would expect and what actually arrives.<\/p>\n

One of my first times dans un bar fran\u00e7ais<\/a> <\/strong>(in a French bar), on top of not knowing how to toast<\/a>, I didn\u2019t know how to order a beer. I guessed<\/a> that it would be similar to \u201cun caf\u00e9 s\u2019il vous plait<\/a><\/strong>\u201d (a coffee please), so I said:<\/p>\n

Une bi\u00e8re s\u2019il vous plait<\/strong>.
\nA beer please.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Then le barman<\/strong> (the bartender) asked me:<\/p>\n

Laquelle ?<\/strong>
\nWhich one?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I was not familiar with any of the bi\u00e8re<\/strong>, but I knew I wanted a stout<\/em>. Cependant<\/strong> (however), I had no idea how to say stout in French! In my confusion, I just asked for whatever name I saw first, but then le barman<\/strong> asked me:<\/p>\n

Un demi ou une pinte ?<\/strong>
\nA half-pint or a pint?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Le probl\u00e8me<\/strong> was that I did not understand what he said! I did not know une pinte <\/strong>was a French word<\/a>, and I had no idea what un demi<\/strong> was referring to! So I said:<\/p>\n

Une bi\u00e8re.<\/strong>
\nA beer.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

My response wasn\u2019t very helpful to le barman<\/strong>. I’m sure he was just as confused as I was. Looking for a solution I pointed at the glass of le client<\/strong> (the patron, the customer) next to me and said:<\/p>\n

La m\u00eame chose que lui.<\/strong>
\nThe same thing as him.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That got me une bi\u00e8re<\/strong>, but once I told mes amis<\/strong> what had happened they had a good laugh explaining how to say different types of bi\u00e8re<\/strong> in French and also that une pinte<\/strong> is just a pint<\/em> and un demi<\/strong> is a half-pint<\/em>!<\/p>\n
