I <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/more-mistakes-thinking-in-english\/\">guessed<\/a> that it would be similar to \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/a-cup-of-coffee-un-cafe-sil-vous-plait\/\">un caf\u00e9 s\u2019il vous plait<\/a><\/strong>\u201d (a coffee please), so I said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Une bi\u00e8re s\u2019il vous plait<\/strong>.<br \/>\nA beer please.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Then <strong>le barman<\/strong> (the bartender) asked me:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Laquelle ?<\/strong><br \/>\nWhich one?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I was not familiar with any of the <strong>bi\u00e8re<\/strong>, but I knew I wanted a <em>stout<\/em>. <strong>Cependant<\/strong> (however), I had no idea how to say stout in French! In my confusion, I just asked for whatever name I saw first, but then <strong>le barman<\/strong> asked me:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Un demi ou une pinte ?<\/strong><br \/>\nA half-pint or a pint?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Le probl\u00e8me<\/strong> was that I did not understand what he said! I did not know <strong>une pinte <\/strong>was a French <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-vocabulary-dansequala\/\">word<\/a>, and I had no idea what <strong>un demi<\/strong> was referring to! So I said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Une bi\u00e8re.<\/strong><br \/>\nA beer.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My response wasn\u2019t very helpful to <strong>le barman<\/strong>. I&#8217;m sure he was just as confused as I was.
