You see, the French term for a night club or disco is \u201c<em>bo\u00eete de nuit<\/em>\u201d \u2026 and \u201c<em>bo\u00eete<\/em>\u201d is the French word for \u201cbox\u201d! And even though I was only 16 when I first went to France, my host brother Fabrice was 20. And he and his friends would often take me out dancing on the weekends at one of the many \u201c<em>bo\u00eetes de nuit<\/em>\u201d scattered around Paris and the suburbs or even while we were on vacation \u2018<em>en Bretagne<\/em>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>I wasn\u2019t much of a drinker*, but I did love to dance. And for my money, France has some of the catchiest, danciest music around. I didn&#8217;t understand the words, but I got the beat, and a noisy \u201c<em>bo\u00eete<\/em>\u201d was a great place to avoid conversations which were still hard for me and my limited French in the early days of my time in France.<\/p>\n<p><em>En souvenir de ces jours (ou plut\u00f4t ces nuits!) heureux <\/em>(As a reminder of those happy days (or nights!)), I\u2019ve selected a couple of my favorites songs from then and now.<\/p>\n<p><em>Tombe pour la France<\/em> (Fallen for France) by Etienne Daho was at the top of the charts in July 1985 when I first got to France. It was the first French song I fell in love with, and it&#8217;s still one of my favorites. C\u2019est comme \u00e7a (That&#8217;s how it is) is pop fun with an equally colorful video.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Les Rita Mitsouko - C&#039;est Comme \u00c7a\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eYYotVPXcFE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Et Alors! by Shy&#8217;m is a more contemporary take. I first heard this song during a 2012 trip to Paris and it has since found a permanent place on my play list.\u00a0 (The expression &#8220;et alors!&#8221; is an interjection that might be translated in English as &#8220;And . . . ?&#8221;, or &#8220;So what!&#8221;,\u00a0 or even &#8220;What&#8217;s it to you \/ what business is it of yours?&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Shy&#039;m - Et Alors ! When you hear &#8220;what she tells me&#8221; (Elle me dit . . . ) you&#8217;ll know why this song makes my list of great &#8220;<em>danse<\/em>&#8221; (dance) songs. [The French &#8216;<em>actrice&#8217; <\/em>(actress) Fanny Ardant appears in this video as the woman in the red dress.]<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"MIKA - Elle Me Dit (Clip officiel)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NiHWwKC8WjU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Over the years, Fabrice and I and our friends had a number of memorable nights out on the town, including one epic night where we went to not one, not two, but three different \u2018<em>bo\u00eetes\u2019 after <\/em>watching the \u201c<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.fr\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0ahUKEwiMld3V2ZPMAhWKGD4KHfpEBk0QyCkIKjAA&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DYbbg6LVSYOI&amp;usg=AFQjCNGNTT-rYOCCxqgszhEntbfZA2Vfmg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">d\u00e9fil\u00e9<\/a>\u201d<\/em> (parade) and \u201c<em>feu d\u2019artifice<\/em>\u201d (fireworks) on the Champs-Elys\u00e9es commemorating France\u2019s \u201c<em>bicentennaire<\/em>\u201d (bicentennial) in \u2018<em>juillet\u2019<\/em> (July), 1989.
