La vie quotidi\u00e8nne<\/strong> (everday life) can sneak up on you in French. You may know how to conjugate the subjunctive<\/a>, but can still have trouble asking someone to fermer les stores<\/strong><\/a> (close the blinds).<\/p>\n

I always have to learn new words for everyday things, like when I needed to buy un tournevis<\/a> ou une pile<\/a><\/strong> (a screwdriver or a battery).<\/p>\n

After I moved to France I needed to laver mes v\u00eatements<\/strong> (wash my clothes), which meant buying laundry detergent. Une fois au supermarch\u00e9<\/strong> (once I was at the supermarket) I realized I didn’t recognize les produits de nettoyage<\/strong> (the cleaning products) and I didn’t know how to talk about le linge<\/strong> (laundry)!<\/p>\n

Walking down les all\u00e9es<\/strong> (the aisles) I spent a few minutes trying to read the names of\u00a0les produits de nettoyage<\/strong>. Not sure what I was looking at, I picked one hoping for the best.<\/p>\n

I went home and gathered le linge sale<\/strong> (the dirty laundry) then went to la laverie au coin de la rue<\/strong> (the laundromat around the corner).<\/p>\n

After j’ai fait la lessive<\/strong> (I did laundry) it became clear that je me suis tromp\u00e9<\/a><\/strong> (I had made a mistake<\/a>). I had bought de l’assouplissant<\/strong> (fabric softener) instead of de la lessive<\/strong> (detergent)!<\/p>\n

I had to go back to le supermarch\u00e9<\/strong> and buy de la lessive<\/strong>! At least I was sure that mes v\u00eatements<\/strong> were very propres<\/strong> (clean)!<\/p>\n
