{"id":2352,"date":"2010-11-17T19:03:39","date_gmt":"2010-11-17T19:03:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/?p=2352"},"modified":"2017-10-18T11:42:28","modified_gmt":"2017-10-18T09:42:28","slug":"french-expressions-about-sleep","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-expressions-about-sleep\/","title":{"rendered":"French Expressions about Sleep"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t sleep on these French sleep expressions.<\/p>\n<p>After <em><strong>une longue journ<em>\u00e9<\/em>e de travail<\/strong> <\/em>(a long day of work),\u00a0<em>c&#8217;est normal d&#8217;<strong>avoir <\/strong><\/em><strong><em>sommeil<\/em><\/strong> (it&#8217;s normal to <strong>feel sleepy<\/strong>), but if you can&#8217;t fall asleep, then you probably suffer from\u00a0<em><strong>une insomnie<\/strong> <\/em>(insomnia.)<\/p>\n<p>If you go to bed early, then you are a <em>couche-t\u00f4t <\/em>(early sleeper); if not, then you&#8217;re a <em>couche-tard <\/em>(late sleeper)!<\/p>\n<p>To go to bed in French is called <em><strong>aller au lit<\/strong><\/em>. You can also say: <em><strong>&#8220;Je vais dormir&#8221; <\/strong><\/em>(&#8220;I&#8217;m going to sleep&#8221;) or <em><strong>&#8220;Je vais me coucher<\/strong>.<\/em><strong>&#8221; <\/strong>In French Slang (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/b-a-ba-de-largot-a-the-abc-of-french-slang-a\/\"><strong>l&#8217;argot<\/strong><\/a><\/em>), you can hear some people use the word &#8220;<em><strong>roupiller<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; (&#8220;to snooze&#8221;), &#8220;<strong><em>pieuter<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;, or the expression &#8220;<em><strong>aller au pieu<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; (&#8220;<em>pieu<\/em>&#8221; being a slang word for bed.)<\/p>\n<p>Before you do so, it would be nice to wish everyone <strong><em>une bonne nuit <\/em><\/strong>(a good night) and tell them &#8220;<strong><em>dormez bien<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; (&#8220;sleep tight&#8221;), or\u00a0<em><strong>&#8220;faites de beaux r<strong><em>\u00ea<\/em><\/strong>ves&#8221; <\/strong><\/em>(&#8220;Sweet dreams&#8221;)&#8230; Of course, if you watched a scary movie in that evening, chances are, you will instead end up having\u00a0<em><strong>un cauchemar<\/strong> <\/em>(a nightmare)!<\/p>\n<p>And if -like we said earlier- you have <em>une insomnie<\/em>, then you are an\u00a0<em><strong>insomniaque<\/strong><\/em>. The next day, you would complain: &#8220;<em>J&#8217;ai pass\u00e9 une nuit blanche&#8221; <\/em>(literally &#8220;I spent a white night&#8221;), <em>&#8220;<\/em><strong><em>Je n&#8217;ai pas pu fermer l&#8217;\u0153il de la nuit<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; (literally &#8220;I couldn&#8217;t close [my] eye the whole night.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pGr2ZVuX5m4\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pGr2ZVuX5m4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And if all solutions fail, like <strong><em>compter les moutons<\/em><\/strong> (to count sheep), or, say, trying to kick out\u00a0<em><strong>ton<\/strong> <strong>camarade de chambre<\/strong> <\/em>(your roommate) <em><strong>qui ronfle beaucoup<\/strong> <\/em>(who snores a lot),\u00a0then you most likely would have to start thinking of taking\u00a0<strong><em>des somnif<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00e8re<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>s <\/em><\/strong>(sleeping pills)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"sleep pro: orth\u00e8se anti-ronflement\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Xd7Whb6U8bA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n<strong> An ingenious French\u00a0<em>anti-ronflement <\/em>(anti-snoring) solution?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, if you are a heavy sleeper, in French &#8220;<strong><em>dormir d&#8217;un sommeil lourd<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; or &#8220;<strong><em>sommeil profond<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; (&#8220;deep sleep&#8221;), then &#8220;<em><strong>dormir \u00e0 poings ferm\u00e9s<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; is what you do best (for either &#8220;to be fast asleep&#8221;, or &#8220;to sleep deeply&#8221;, &#8220;to sleep soundly.&#8221;) In a similar context, you can also say &#8220;<strong><em>dormir comme un b<\/em><em>\u00e9<\/em><em>b<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00e9&#8221; <\/em>(&#8220;to sleep like a baby&#8221;), or, as the funny expression goes, &#8220;<em><strong>dormir sur ses deux oreilles<\/strong><\/em>&#8221; (&#8220;to sleep on both ears&#8221;), meaning &#8220;<strong><em>dormir tranquille<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;, namely to rest easy, to sleep without any worries whatsoever.<\/p>\n<p>All you need for <strong><em>dormir<\/em><\/strong> is <em><strong>un lit<\/strong> <\/em>(a bed), and maybe <em><strong>des<\/strong><\/em><strong> <em>oreillers<\/em><\/strong> (pillows), <em><strong>des draps<\/strong><\/em> (sheets), and <em><strong>une<\/strong><\/em><strong> <em>couverture<\/em><\/strong> (a blanket.)<br \/>\nOf course, other elements can prove necessary, such as a rope or a chain to tightly tie you to your bed, in case you are a\u00a0<em><strong>somnambule<\/strong><\/em> (sleepwalker)!<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Somnambulisme RTBF Mardi 6 D\u00e9cembre CouzcopNono\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UHnDG2ONi9I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n<strong><em>Est-il dangereux de r<em>\u00e9<\/em>veiller un somnambule? <\/em>(Is it dangerous to wake up a sleepwalker?)<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<img width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2010\/11\/113755935.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image tmp-hide-img\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2010\/11\/113755935.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2010\/11\/113755935-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p>Don&#8217;t sleep on these French sleep expressions.
