Something as simple as <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/its-prime-time-open-windows-in-french\/\">closing the blinds<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/when-are-stores-open-in-france\/\">going to the store<\/a> can catch you off guard. Licensed under <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/2.0\/\">CC BY 2.0<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Something that confused me is what <strong>les Fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> (French people) mean when they say <strong>un caf\u00e9<\/strong>, as in a place to buy a cup of joe and not <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-weird-al-oldelaf-et-monsieur-d\/\"><strong>le caf\u00e9<\/strong><\/a> (coffee) itself. Ordering coffee in <strong>un caf\u00e9<\/strong> is nothing unusual, even if <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/american-coffee-in-french\/\">the vocabulary is different<\/a>, but it may be suprising to see that you can <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/it-comes-in-pints-beer-in-french\/\">have a pint<\/a> as well!<\/p>\n<p>I was surprised the first time<strong> un ami<\/strong> (a friend) <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/voici-mon-numero-so-call-me-maybe\/\">called me<\/a> and said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Je suis en ville! Tu veux prendre une bi\u00e8re au caf\u00e9 ?<\/strong><br \/>\nI\u2019m in town! You want to grab a beer at the cafe?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I agreed to meet him, but had to think about what he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Prendre une bi\u00e8re au caf\u00e9.<\/strong><br \/>\nGrab a beer at the cafe.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I thought I maybe heard the wrong word, but when I got to <strong>le caf\u00e9<\/strong>, <strong>mon ami<\/strong> was waiting for me, and he already had <strong>une bi\u00e8re<\/strong>. I asked <strong>mon ami<\/strong> if there is a difference between <strong>un bar<\/strong> and <strong>un caf\u00e9<\/strong> and he was somewhat surprised by my question.<\/p>\n<p>For a lot of French people, there isn\u2019t much of a difference! <strong>Un bar<\/strong> will generally be open later, and be more focused on alcohol than coffee or food, but in many situations <strong>un caf\u00e9<\/strong> is pretty much the same as <strong>un bar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>De plus<\/strong> (what&#8217;s more), there\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/la-poste-sending-snail-mail-in-french\/\">buying stamps at <strong>un tabac<\/strong><\/a>, another place where you can order <strong>un caf\u00e9<\/strong> or <strong>une bi\u00e8re<\/strong>! In France, <strong>les caf\u00e9s, les bars et les tabacs <\/strong>sometimes overlap.
