I saw a tweet from Transparent Language<\/a> about a word that had recently caused me some trouble:<\/p>\n

Un barbeuc<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I had recently heard le mot<\/strong> (the word) when un ami<\/strong> (a friend) invited me to un barbeuc<\/strong>. The only problem being I had no idea what un barbeuc<\/strong> actually was. I was too afraid to for an explanation and pretended to understand after I had been asked:<\/p>\n

On va faire un barbeuc mercredi prochain, tu peux y aller ?<\/strong>
\nWe\u2019re having un barbeuc<\/em> next Wednesday, can you come?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I agreed to go because I wanted to have fun with mes amis<\/strong>, but the mystery of le barbeuc<\/strong><\/em> remained.<\/p>\n

I tried to use English<\/a> to figure it out, but that didn’t work, and as the conversation continued it became pretty clear that I didn\u2019t know what I was talking about.<\/p>\n

\nNon\u2026 Pas vraiment\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

Do you know what a barbeuc<\/em> is?

After a round of laughter, mon ami<\/strong> said to me:<\/p>\n

C\u2019est un autre mot pour un barbecue !<\/strong>
\nIt’s another word for barbecue!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I tried to act like I had known all along, but it was obvious I was lying. At least I knew I could bring de la bi\u00e8re<\/strong><\/a> (some beer) and it would be fine!<\/p>\n
