While <em>le M<\/em>\u00e9<em>tro <\/em>is just one part of a vast network of public transport options in and around <em>la capitale<\/em> (including <em>les trains de la SNCF, les bus, et les RER &#8211; g\u00e9r\u00e9s, comme le M<\/em>\u00e9<em>tro, par la RATP)** <\/em>it is easily the most useful (except of course for when there is\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/zazie-dans-le-metro-et-ailleurs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">une gr\u00e8ve!<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This past week, the RATP introduced <em>une nouvelle campagne publicitaire <\/em>(a new advertising campaign) aimed at increasing awareness of safety measures in the Metro. This week\u2019s title is a play on words that you might translate as \u201ctransportation out of the ordinary\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>** <em>La R\u00e9gie autonome des transports parisiens<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ratp.fr\/en\/ratp\/c_21879\/visiting-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RATP<\/a>) is the group responsable, along with the SNCF (<em>Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Nationale de Chemin de Fer<\/em>) for managing the public transport networks in and around Paris. Le RER (<em>R\u00e9seau Express R\u00e9gional<\/em>) is a network of high-speed or express subway trains including the RATP lines A and B sud and SNCF lines B nord, C, D, and E.<\/p>\n<p>*** \u2018<em>station\u2019<\/em> is the French word for a subway station, however if you\u2019re talking about a train station, the correct term would be \u2018<em>gare<\/em>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>**** \u201c<em>voies<\/em>\u201d litteraly means \u201cway\u201d or \u201croute\u201d. It is a generic term for the place where traffic of any kind flows. In this case, it means tracks and area through which the subway train runs.<\/p>\n<p>***** \u2018<em>rame\u2019<\/em> is one of those words that I always find tricky to convey in English. It literally means \u201ctrain\u201d but it doesn\u2019t mean just a choo-choo train (as in \u2018<em>chemin de fer\u2019 <\/em>which is the proper term for \u201crailway\u201d) but any ensemble of cars that make up a train . . . as in a subway train, or a train train. So while \u2018<em>le M<\/em>\u00e9<em>tro<\/em>\u2019 is the whole system, \u2018<em>une rame de Metro<\/em>\u2019 is a single metro train.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Paris has one of the oldest \u2013 and for my money, best \u2013 subway systems in the world.
