While writing mon m\u00e9moire<\/strong><\/a>, I had to deal with l\u2019angoisse de la page blanche<\/strong> all the time. I would write as long as I could, and then reach a moment where I felt like I couldn\u2019t write anymore.<\/p>\n

One time while dealing with cette angoisse<\/strong> (this anxiety), I needed to look up une expression<\/strong> (an expression, an idiom) I wanted to use in mon m\u00e9more<\/strong> : lost in translation<\/em>.<\/p>\n

To my surprise, there is no equivalent in French!<\/p>\n

I found few suggestions, intraduisible<\/strong> and perdu \u00e0 la traduction<\/strong>, but there doesn’t seem to be une expression fran\u00e7aise<\/strong><\/a> (an French expression\/idiom) that directly matches it. L’expression<\/strong><\/a> was lost in translation<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I thoguht to look up la traduction<\/strong> of the 2003 movie, Lost in Translation<\/em>, to see how le film<\/strong><\/a> (the movie) was translated.<\/p>\n

En France<\/strong>, the title is the same as in English: Lost in Translation<\/em><\/p>\n

Au<\/a> Qu\u00e9bec<\/strong>, the title is translated, and provides an idea for how to say it: Traduction infind\u00e8le<\/em><\/p>\n

The most important thing to take away was how une traduction litt\u00e9rale <\/strong>(a direct translation) ne sonne pas naturelle<\/strong> (doesn\u2019t sound natural) to French speakers. Learning not just how to say what you want to say, but to make what you want to say sonne naturel<\/strong>, is a big part of learning French.<\/p>\n

It has also been the hardest part of writing mon m\u00e9moire<\/strong> and dealing with l’angoisse de la page blanche <\/strong>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"
