Last week j’ai pass\u00e9 ma soutenance de m\u00e9moire<\/strong> (I defended my thesis). After working hard on mon m\u00e9moire<\/strong><\/a>, everything came down to un expos\u00e9<\/strong> (a presentation) in front of mes professeurs<\/strong> (my professors).<\/p>\n

La soutenance<\/strong> is the last step in completing un master<\/strong> (a master’s). Finding a concise way to present all la recherche et<\/strong> la<\/strong> probl\u00e9matiqu<\/strong>e<\/strong><\/a> can be un vrai casse-t\u00eate<\/strong> (a real headache).<\/p>\n

On top of fighting l’angoisse de la page blanche<\/strong><\/a>, there is all the usual stress leading up to l’expos\u00e9<\/strong>. De plus<\/strong> (what’s more) it’s hard to know what sounds right when you’re not un locuteur natif<\/strong> (a native speaker).<\/p>\n

When I finally walked into the room and begin talking, j’\u00e9tais tellement fatigu\u00e9<\/strong> (I was so tired) that I didn’t have any energy left to be nervous.<\/p>\n

I started mon expos\u00e9<\/strong> by excusing any mistakes<\/a> I might make:<\/p>\n

Madames, Messieurs, bonjour. Je suis conscient du fait que j’ai un accent. Si jamais<\/a> vous ne me comprenez pas, n’h\u00e9sitez pas de me le dire et je peux r\u00e9p\u00e9ter ce que j’ai dit.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon. I am aware of the fact that I have an accent. If you cannot understand me, don’t hesitate to let me know and I can repeat what I have said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I had practiced ma soutenance<\/strong> plus de cinquante fois<\/strong> (more than fifty times). Once I started I did not stop until l’expos\u00e9<\/strong> was finished.<\/p>\n

When mes professeurs<\/strong> started asking me questions, les heures de recherche<\/strong> (the hours of research) paid off when I knew how to answer every question they asked.<\/p>\n
