Licensed under CC BY-NC 2.0.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/finding-a-job-in-french\/\">looking for a job<\/a>, whether it&#8217;s <strong>un job \u00e0 plein temps ou \u00e0 mi-temps<\/strong> (a full or part time job), it&#8217;s important to know the type of contract involved.<\/p>\n<p>In France, There are two main types of contracts: <em>le CDI et le CDD<\/em>. These two types of contracts are almost always used in their abbreviated form, which can be confusing if you have never seen them before.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CDI : Contrat \u00e0 dur\u00e9e ind\u00e9termin\u00e9e<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most employment in France is under <strong>un CDI<\/strong> (a permanent contract). <strong>Le CDI<\/strong> means you have stable employment with benefits.<\/p>\n<p>According to <strong>le code du travail<\/strong> (the French labor code):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>L 1242-13 : Le contrat de travail \u00e0 dur\u00e9e ind\u00e9termin\u00e9e est la forme normale et g\u00e9n\u00e9rale de la relation de travail.<\/strong><br \/>\nL 1242-13: The permanent employment contract is the normal and general form of the working relationship.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Without <strong>le jargon juridique<\/strong> (the legalese), <strong>le CDI<\/strong> is the usual contract for work in France.<\/p>\n<p>There is no end date and no minimum or maximum duration for <strong>un CDI<\/strong>, but there can be <strong>une p\u00e9riode d&#8217;essai<\/strong> (a probationary period) included in the contract.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24893\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24893\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24893\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/8642605447_f84e663fa6_z.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;Contract&quot; by Jan Truter on Flickr. Licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 2.0.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The other type of contract is <strong>le CDD <\/strong>(the fixed-term contract), and as the name implies it is a contract for a specific amount of time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CDD : Contrat \u00e0 dur\u00e9e d\u00e9termin\u00e9e<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Le CDD<\/strong> specifies the amount of time you will be working with a given company. It is considered an exceptional contract and cannot be renewed once it\u2019s finished.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Le CDD<\/strong> is used in a few different cases including<strong> l\u2019accroissement temporaire des activit\u00e9s normales ou saisonni\u00e8res<\/strong> (temporary increase in normal or seasonal activity) and <strong>le remplacement d&#8217;un salari\u00e9<\/strong> (the replacement of an employee).<\/p>\n<p>There are many cases where <strong>un CDD<\/strong> could be used to <strong>remplacer un salari\u00e9 :<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Un salari\u00e9 en cong\u00e9 maladie ou parental<\/strong> (an employee out on sick or parental leave)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Un futur salari\u00e9 en CDI ne peut pas commencer dans l&#8217;imm\u00e9diat<\/strong> (a new permanent employee cannot begin right away)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Un salari\u00e9 pass\u00e9 provisoirement en temps partiel<\/strong> (an employee temporarily switching to part-time)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Un poste d&#8217;un ancien salari\u00e9 va \u00eatre supprim\u00e9<\/strong> (an old employee&#8217;s position is going to be eliminated)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Cependant<\/strong> (however), it is strictly illegal to <strong>remplacer un salari\u00e9 en gr\u00e8ve<\/strong> (replace an employee on strike).<\/p>\n<p>One interesting difference between these two different types of contracts is <strong>le CDI<\/strong> does not have to be written, but <strong>le CDD<\/strong> must include a written contract.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s easy to get lost in <strong>le jargon juridique<\/strong> and the alphabet soup of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/editors-note-understanding-acronyms-and-abbreviations\/\">abbreviations<\/a>.
