While I’ve been looking for a job<\/a> and finishing mon m\u00e9moire<\/strong><\/a>, there has been another big source of stress in my life here in France: dealing with l\u2019administration fran\u00e7aise<\/strong> (the French administration\/government) and le paperasse<\/strong> (the paperwork) that comes with it.<\/p>\n

Ma carte de s\u00e9jour<\/strong> (my residence permit) recently expired, and I had to go to la pr\u00e9fecture<\/strong> (administrative center) in order to renouveler<\/strong> (renew) it. For many people saying the word “pr\u00e9fecture”<\/strong> brings up thoughts of le paperasse<\/strong><\/a> and les queues<\/strong> (the lines). It can be difficult and intimidating dealing with l’administration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The first thing I needed to do was prendre un rendez-vous<\/strong> (make an appointment). I figured out where to prendre un rendez-vous<\/strong> on le site web de la pr\u00e9fecture<\/strong> (the administrative center’s website), and then printed it out<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Before I left for la pr\u00e9fecture<\/strong> I made sure to prepare tous les documents requis<\/strong> (all the required documents) and des photos d’identit\u00e9<\/strong> (some ID photos).<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

If you only have des photos d’identit\u00e9 <\/strong>from the US, then they will not be the right size! Cependant<\/strong> (however), it\u2019s cheap and easy to get une photo d’identit\u00e9<\/strong> that is the right size. Heureusement<\/strong> (luckily), there are photo booths spread around les centres commerciales<\/strong> (malls) and les gares<\/strong> (train stations).<\/p>\n

With my new photos d’identit\u00e9<\/strong>, tous les documents requis<\/strong>, and un rendez-vous<\/strong> I could finally go to la pr\u00e9fecture<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

I promptly arrived ready to face the last obstacle of l\u2019administration<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

Il faut savoir attendre<\/a>.<\/strong>
\nYou have to know how to wait.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Je prenais un num\u00e9ro<\/strong> (I took a number) and took a seat in la salle d\u2019attente<\/strong> (the waiting room) and began l’attente<\/strong> (the wait). With all the stress of school<\/a>, work, and la carte de s\u00e9jour<\/strong> weighing on me, l’attente<\/strong> seemed to last forever.<\/p>\n
