Licensed under CC BY 2.0.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When <strong>mes dents<\/strong> (my teeth) started hurting I knew I needed to go to <strong>le cabinet du dentiste<\/strong> (the dentist&#8217;s office) to figure out what was wrong. I thought it might be my wisdom teeth, but I did not know how to say the word in French! I knew I had to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/22685-2\/\">look up how to say it<\/a> before I left.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Dents de sagesse<\/strong><br \/>\nWisdom teeth<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I was surprised to learn that <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/more-mistakes-thinking-in-english\/\">thinking in English<\/a> would have worked to figure out how to say the word! <strong>Ensuite<\/strong> (next), I needed to figure out how to say that my teeth hurt.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>J&#8217;ai mal aux dents.<\/strong><br \/>\nMy teeth hurt.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I thought that would be enough, but was soon left trying to answer questions about <strong>mon dossier m\u00e9dical<\/strong> (my medical history) and the pain I was feeling while <strong>le dentiste<\/strong> examined <strong>mes dents<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Quand est-ce que vous avez commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 avoir mal ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Mmmmeughgh\u2026.<br \/>\nEst-ce que vous pouvez r\u00e9p\u00e9ter s&#8217;il vous pla\u00eet ?<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nWhen did you start feeling pain?<br \/>\nMmmmeughgh\u2026.<br \/>\nCan you please repeat that?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The real vocabulary surprise came after the general check-up and <strong>le dentiste<\/strong> told me he needed <em><strong>une radiographie<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>J&#8217;ai besoin d&#8217;une radiographie. Vous pouvez la passer pr\u00e8s d&#8217;ici.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>D&#8217;accord, mais qu&#8217;est-ce que c&#8217;est une radiographie ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Une radiographie ? C&#8217;est comme une photo pour les os.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Aaah, oui, je comprends !<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I need <em>une radiographie<\/em>. You can get one close by.<br \/>\nAlright, but what is <em>une radiographie<\/em>?<br \/>\n<em>Une radiographie<\/em>? It&#8217;s like a photo for bones.<br \/>\nAaah, yes, I understand!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After the brief exchange I understood that <em><strong>une radiographie<\/strong><\/em> is <em>an X-ray<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p>My first confusing visit <strong>chez le dentiste<\/strong> was over and fortunately <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/is-that-covered-by-your-insurance-in-france\/\"><strong>l\u2019assurance<\/strong><\/a> (the insurance) was easy to figure out!
