Jean-Claude est le fr\u00e8re de ma belle-m\u00e8re. <\/strong><em>(Aunt Rose is the wife of Jean-Claude. Jean-Claude is the brother of my mother-in-law.) <\/em><strong>Rose et Jean-Claude habitent \u00e0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amqui\" target=\"_blank\">Amqui<\/a>. Amqui est une petite ville dans l&#8217;est du Provence de Qu\u00e9bec. <\/strong>(<em>Rose and Jean-Claude live in Amqui. Amqui is a small city in the eastern part of Qu\u00e9bec.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rose et Jean-Claude sont \u00e0 la retraite. <\/strong>(<em>Rose and Jean-Claude are retired.) <\/em>So as their novelty license plate says <strong>ils ont pas d&#8217;heure, pas d&#8217;adresse, pas de t\u00e9l\u00e9phone, et pas d&#8217;argent! <\/strong><em>(they have no time, no address, no telephone, and no money!**)<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25200\" style=\"width: 686px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25200\" class=\"wp-image-25200 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-14-at-9.46.31-PM.png\" alt=\"Notre week-end \u00e0 Amqui. Our weekend in Amqui.\" width=\"676\" height=\"814\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-14-at-9.46.31-PM.png 676w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/11\/Screen-Shot-2016-11-14-at-9.46.31-PM-291x350.png 291w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25200\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Notre week-end.<\/strong> <em>Our weekend.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Amqui est \u00e0 la porte de <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gasp%C3%A9,_Quebec\" target=\"_blank\">la Gasp\u00e9sie<\/a>. <\/strong>(<em>Amqui is at the doorstep of the Gasp\u00e9 region.<\/em>) The Gasp\u00e9 is a beautiful, wild region full of great hikes, river and ocean views and other outdoor adventures. And while Amqui is just outside, it still offers lots of fun. It is also <strong>la ville des ponts couverts. <\/strong>(<em>the town of covered bridges.<\/em>) The mayor of Amqui loves covered bridges so much that he even had one &#8216;imported&#8217; from the next town!<\/p>\n<p>One of the highlights of our trip was a hike to <strong>les chutes \u00e0 Philom\u00e8ne\u00a0 <\/strong>(<em>the Philomene falls)*** <\/em>The falls are accessible via two trails, one which leads to the <strong>haut de la chute <\/strong>(<em>top of the falls<\/em>) and another, much steeper, which leads to the <strong>bas de la chute<\/strong> (<em>the bottom of the falls).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We also enjoyed <strong>plusieurs parties de cartes<\/strong>. (<em>many card games.) <\/em>Like many of us, <strong>tante Rose aime jouer aux cartes . . . mais elle n&#8217;aime pas perdre!<\/strong> (<em>aunt Rose likes to play cards . . . but she doesn&#8217;t like to lose!)<\/em> Happily for all of us, <strong>elle a gangn\u00e9.<\/strong> (<em>she won<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Et pour finir cette semaine,<\/strong> (<em>And to finish this week,)<\/em> a little vocabulary lesson. Amqui is located at the confluence of two <strong>rivi\u00e8res. <\/strong>(<em>rivers<\/em>.) French has two words for &#8216;river&#8217; where English generally has one. In French, <strong>une rivi\u00e8re <\/strong>is a &#8216;river that flows into another river&#8217;. <strong>Un fleuve<\/strong> is &#8216;a river that flows to the ocean&#8217;. La Seine, which flows through Paris, is <strong>un fleuve.<\/strong> So is Le Saint-Laurent (the Saint Laurnce) which flows to the Atlantic Ocean by way of Qu\u00e9bec City.<\/p>\n<p>* &#8216;<em>Bon baiser de . . . &#8216;<\/em> is an old expression that people used to sign postcards from their vacation destinations with. It&#8217;s also famously part of the movie title &#8216;<em>Bons baisers de Russie&#8217; <\/em>otherwise known as &#8220;From Russia With Love&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>** In a good way . . . except for the &#8216;no money&#8217; . . . and even then, after more than 40 years in the same town, they&#8217;re doing just fine!<\/p>\n<p>*** The falls get their name from Madame Philom\u00e8ne Dub\u00e9, who lived nearby with her husband, Fran\u00e7ois Gauthier.
