After many months of hard work on mon m\u00e9moire<\/strong><\/a> and years of studying for mon master<\/strong><\/a>, I finally received mon dipl\u00f4me <\/strong>(my diploma) here in France!<\/p>\n

La plupart des universit\u00e9s<\/strong> (most universities) in France do not have a special ceremony when it’s time to graduate. Normalement <\/strong>(normally), you receive le dipl\u00f4me<\/strong> in the mail<\/a> or have to go to le secr\u00e9tariat<\/strong> (the administration office) and have them hand it to you. It\u2019s a very mundane affair.<\/p>\n

Cependant<\/strong> (however), the head of the department for my degree is une Am\u00e9ricaine<\/strong>, and she likes to give les \u00e9tudiants<\/strong> a special sendoff for completing the degree, including une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie de remise des dipl\u00f4mes<\/strong> (a graduation ceremony).<\/p>\n

I had the good luck of getting to wear un costume universitaire<\/strong> (a cap and gown) and walk across a stage thanks to la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie de remise des dipl\u00f4mes<\/strong>! Mon professeur<\/strong> (my professor) handed me le vrai dipl\u00f4me<\/strong> (the real diploma) and we took a photo together after I signed for it. I then waited with mes camarades de classe<\/strong> (my classmates) while the rest of my class was called on to the stage.<\/p>\n

It was a fun way to end mes \u00e9tudes<\/strong> (my studies) here in France and an experience I’ll remember for the rest of my life.<\/p>\n

As for le dipl\u00f4me lui-m\u00eame<\/strong> (the degree itself), les dipl\u00f4mes<\/strong> and les notes<\/strong> (grades, marks) have everything you would expect: the official title of le master<\/strong> and the official signatures and seals of l’universit\u00e9<\/strong>. There is also a system similar to graduating with honors<\/em> or cum laude<\/em>:<\/p>\n

Avec mention, avec mention assez bien<\/strong> – Cum laude
\nAvec mention bien<\/strong> – Magna cum laude
\nAvec mention tr\u00e8s bien<\/strong> – Summa cum laude<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It may be the end of my adventures in French academia, and while I still don\u2019t understand all the intricacies of why classes have to be separated into les CMs et les TDs<\/strong><\/a>, I now have a deep appreciation for their education system<\/a> and all it has taught me.<\/p>\n

As for mes notes finales<\/strong> (my final grades), I may not have received un vingt sur vingt<\/strong><\/a>, but I did graduate avec mention bien<\/strong>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"
