My personal favorite is Un chant de No\u00ebl<\/strong> (A Christmas Carol)<\/em> by Charles Dickens. Although originally in English, Un chant de No\u00ebl<\/strong><\/em> can help your French!<\/p>\n

I have written about how it can be useful to watch your favorite TV shows and movies<\/a> either with les sous-titres fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> or doubl\u00e9es en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> (dubbed in French). While it\u2019s preferable to watch a movie or a TV show en VOST<\/a><\/strong>, being familiar with the characters and the story in your first language can help you stay engaged in another language.<\/p>\n

The same idea works with les livres<\/strong> (books)! If you have a favorite book in English, you can usually find it en version fran\u00e7aise<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Dans l’esprit de No\u00ebl<\/strong><\/a> (in the Christmas spirit), one such example is Un chant de No\u00ebl<\/strong><\/em>, a story that has been retold many times and in many different styles. My first memory of the story is la version de Disney<\/strong> (the Disney version) where Balthazar Picsou<\/strong> (Scrooge McDuck) plays the role of Ebenezer Scrooge and Dingo<\/strong> (Goofy) is le fant\u00f4me de Jacob Marley<\/strong> (the ghost of Jacob Marley).<\/p>\n

The novella is most commonly known as Un chant de No\u00ebl<\/strong> <\/em>in French, but it was also published under the names of Cantique de No\u00ebl<\/strong><\/em>, Chanson de No\u00ebl<\/strong><\/em>, and Conte de No\u00ebl<\/strong><\/em>. No matter the version It’s easy to recognize le th\u00e8me g\u00e9n\u00e9ral<\/strong> (the overarching theme):<\/p>\n

Scrooge d\u00e9teste No\u00ebl<\/strong>
\n\u00ab Foutaises ! \u00bb <\/a><\/strong>
