Le nouvel an est ici<\/strong>\u00a0(the new year is here)\u00a0! The whole world is celebrating as 2017 is welcomed and we say au revoir<\/strong> <\/em>to 2016. While la Saint-Sylvestre<\/strong> (New Year\u2019s Eve) is all about welcoming in le nouvel an<\/strong>, the traditions around it can vary around the world, from la boule horaire <\/strong>(the time ball) in New York to eating des raisins<\/strong> (grapes) in Spain and other Spanish-speaking cultures.<\/p>\n

En France <\/strong>(in France), le reveillon de la Saint-Sylvestre<\/strong> (New Year\u2019s Eve) consists of du champagne et du fois gras<\/strong> (champagne and foie gras) with kisses exchanged at midnight, traditionally sous une branche de gui<\/strong> (under a mistletoe branch). People take a moment to make their v\u0153ux du nouvel An<\/strong> (New Year\u2019s resolutions) during la Saint-Sylvestre<\/strong> and \u00e9changer les \u00e9trennes <\/strong>(exchange New Year\u2019s gifts).<\/p>\n

Les \u00e9trennes<\/strong> <\/em>is a special word for un cadeau<\/strong>, but only un cadeau de No\u00ebl<\/strong> or un cadeau pour le nouvel An<\/strong>. The word finds its origins in the Roman goddess of the new year, Strena<\/em> <\/strong>(Strenua<\/em>). In ancient Rome she was celebrated on January 1st with various gifts in the hopes of bringing good luck.<\/p>\n

There is also a lot of noise made during the celebration with cries of \u201cbonne ann\u00e9e<\/strong>\u201d (Happy New Year) and the sound of les klaxons de voitures<\/strong> (car horns) across all of France. If you fall asleep, all the noise may wake you up even if you forgot to set an alarm<\/a>!<\/p>\n

\u00c0 Paris<\/strong> many people gather along les Champs \u00c9lys\u00e9es<\/strong><\/a> and under la tour Eiffel<\/strong> to watch les feux d’artifice<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u00c0 20 heures<\/strong> (at 8 o\u2019clock), a few hours before the start of the new year, le pr\u00e9sident de la r\u00e9publique fran\u00e7aise<\/strong> gives an address to the country stating their v\u0153ux pr\u00e9sidentiels<\/strong> for the year that is about to begin. This was the last time Fran\u00e7ois Hollande<\/em> will be giving his v\u0153ux pr\u00e9sidentiels<\/strong> as he is not running in the 2017 election.<\/p>\n

As things wind down and people start waking up with la gueule de bois<\/strong> (a hangover) there is still time to think about les bonnes r\u00e9solutions<\/strong>. Traditionally les v\u0153ux du nouvel An<\/strong> can be made up until le 31 janvier<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
