The whole world is celebrating as 2017 is welcomed and we say <em><strong>au revoir<\/strong> <\/em>to 2016. Licensed under CC BY-ND 2.0.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>En France <\/strong>(in France),<strong> le reveillon de la Saint-Sylvestre<\/strong> (New Year\u2019s Eve) consists of <strong>du champagne et du fois gras<\/strong> (champagne and foie gras) with kisses exchanged at midnight, traditionally <strong>sous une branche de gui<\/strong> (under a mistletoe branch). People take a moment to make their <strong>v\u0153ux du nouvel An<\/strong> (New Year\u2019s resolutions) during <strong>la Saint-Sylvestre<\/strong> and <strong>\u00e9changer les \u00e9trennes <\/strong>(exchange New Year\u2019s gifts).<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Les \u00e9trennes<\/strong> <\/em>is a special word for <strong>un cadeau<\/strong>, but only <strong>un cadeau de No\u00ebl<\/strong> or <strong>un cadeau pour le nouvel An<\/strong>. The word finds its origins in the Roman goddess of the new year, <strong><em>Strena<\/em> <\/strong>(<em>Strenua<\/em>). In ancient Rome she was celebrated on January 1st with various gifts in the hopes of bringing good luck.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a lot of noise made during the celebration with cries of \u201c<strong>bonne ann\u00e9e<\/strong>\u201d (Happy New Year) and the sound of <strong>les klaxons de voitures<\/strong> (car horns) across all of France. This was the last time <em>Fran\u00e7ois Hollande<\/em> will be giving his <strong>v\u0153ux pr\u00e9sidentiels<\/strong> as he is not running in the 2017 election.<\/p>\n<p>As things wind down and people start waking up with <strong>la gueule de bois<\/strong> (a hangover) there is still time to think about <strong>les bonnes r\u00e9solutions<\/strong>.
