People take a moment to make their <strong>v\u0153ux du nouvel An<\/strong> (New Year\u2019s resolutions) during <strong>la Saint-Sylvestre<\/strong> and <strong>\u00e9changer les \u00e9trennes <\/strong>(exchange New Year\u2019s gifts).<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Les \u00e9trennes<\/strong> <\/em>is a special word for <strong>un cadeau<\/strong>, but only <strong>un cadeau de No\u00ebl<\/strong> or <strong>un cadeau pour le nouvel An<\/strong>. The word finds its origins in the Roman goddess of the new year, <strong><em>Strena<\/em> <\/strong>(<em>Strenua<\/em>). In ancient Rome she was celebrated on January 1st with various gifts in the hopes of bringing good luck.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a lot of noise made during the celebration with cries of \u201c<strong>bonne ann\u00e9e<\/strong>\u201d (Happy New Year) and the sound of <strong>les klaxons de voitures<\/strong> (car horns) across all of France.
