I learn new things everyday by making mistakes<\/a>. Whether I need to buy un chargeur<\/a><\/strong> or find un dentiste<\/strong><\/a>, there seems to be an endless vocabulary list of words I didn\u2019t realize I didn\u2019t know!<\/p>\n

Finding out you don\u2019t know un mot<\/strong> (a word) can be quite the learning experience. Many mundane experiences<\/a> hide the hardest words to learn. The first time I had to tell un ami<\/strong> (a friend) that I was going grocery shopping<\/em> really taught me how hard it can be to explain some ideas.<\/p>\n

The conversation with mon ami\u00a0<\/strong> was normal until I reached a word I didn’t know how to say:<\/p>\n

Salut John ! \u00c7a va ?<\/strong>
\n Oui, \u00e7a va, et toi\u00a0?<\/strong>
\n \u00c7a va, \u00e7a va. Tu fais quoi maintenant\u00a0?<\/strong>
\n je vais\u2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hi John! How are you?
\nI\u2019m find, and you?
\nI\u2019m doing alright. What are you doing now?
\nI\u2019m going to\u2026.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I froze and in between the euhs<\/strong> <\/em>and ums<\/strong> <\/em>I realized that not only did I not know how to say grocery shopping<\/em>, I didn\u2019t know how to explain what grocery shopping is! Faire du shopping<\/strong><\/a> (shopping) wouldn\u2019t work and something like acheter de la nourriture<\/strong> (buying food) sounds weird and could be confused with going to un restaurant<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

After an uncomfortable amount of time I said the first thing that came to my mind:<\/p>\n

Je vais… faire quelque chose\u2026.<\/strong>
\n D\u2019accord\u2026.<\/strong>
\n Et bien, \u00e0 bient\u00f4t !<\/strong>
\n \u00c0 bient\u00f4t ?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m going to… do something\u2026.
\nAlright\u2026.
\nWell, later!
\nLater?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

After the awkward exchange I made my way to l’\u00e9picerie<\/strong> (the grocery store), but on my way home I ran into mon ami<\/strong> again. With a few sacs de courses<\/strong> (grocery bags) in hand, I felt I could explain what I couldn\u2019t say earlier.<\/p>\n

Salut !<\/strong>
\n Salut John ! Alors, tu as fait quelque chose ?<\/strong>
\n Ouais\u2026 En fait, je ne savais pas comment on dit faire du shopping mais dans un magasin<\/a> o\u00f9 on ach\u00e8te de la nourriture.<\/strong>
\nUn restaurant ?<\/strong>
\nNon, o\u00f9 on ach\u00e8te des l\u00e9gumes, de la viande et de la bi\u00e8re entre autre chose.<\/strong>
\nUne \u00e9picerie ?<\/strong>
\nOui c’est \u00e7a ! J’allais faire du shopping dans une \u00e9picerie !<\/strong>
\n Faire les courses\u00a0! C\u2019est pour \u00e7a que tu m\u2019as dit \u00ab\u00a0quelque chose\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0?<\/strong>
\n Oui c\u2019est \u00e7a\u2026.<\/strong>
\nT\u2019inqui\u00e8tes! C\u2019est comme \u00e7a qu\u2019on apprend\u00a0!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hi\u00a0!
\nHi John\u00a0! So did you do something?
\nYeah\u2026 Actually, I didn\u2019t know how to say \u201cgo shopping\u201d, but in a store where you buy food.
\nA restaurant?
\nNon, where you buy vegetables, meat and beer among other things.
\nA grocery store?
\nYes that’s it! I was going shopping in a grocery strore!
\nGrocery shopping! That\u2019s why you told me \u201csomething\u201d?
\nYeah, that\u2019s it….
\nDon\u2019t worry! That\u2019s how you learn!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Between les rires<\/strong> (the laughter) of mon ami<\/strong> I made sure to remember faire les courses<\/strong><\/em><\/a>. I even started putting le mot<\/strong> at the top of mes listes de courses<\/strong> (my shopping lists)!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"
