Many <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/is-that-covered-by-your-insurance-in-france\/\">mundane experiences<\/a> hide the hardest words to learn. The first time I had to tell <strong>un ami<\/strong> (a friend) that I was going <em>grocery shopping<\/em> really taught me how hard it can be to explain some ideas.<\/p>\n<p>The conversation with <strong>mon ami\u00a0<\/strong> was normal until I reached a word I didn&#8217;t know how to say:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Salut John ! \u00c7a va ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> Oui, \u00e7a va, et toi\u00a0?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> \u00c7a va, \u00e7a va. Tu fais quoi maintenant\u00a0?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> je vais\u2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hi John! How are you?<br \/>\nI\u2019m find, and you?<br \/>\nI\u2019m doing alright. What are you doing now?<br \/>\nI\u2019m going to\u2026.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I froze and in between the <em><strong>euhs<\/strong> <\/em>and <em><strong>ums<\/strong> <\/em>I realized that not only did I not know how to say <em>grocery shopping<\/em>, I didn\u2019t know how to explain what grocery shopping is! <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/5-things-you-need-to-know-about-shopping-in-france\/\"><strong>Faire du shopping<\/strong><\/a> (shopping) wouldn\u2019t work and something like <strong>acheter de la nourriture<\/strong> (buying food) sounds weird and could be confused with going to <strong>un restaurant<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>After an uncomfortable amount of time I said the first thing that came to my mind:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Je vais&#8230; faire quelque chose\u2026.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> D\u2019accord\u2026.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> Et bien, \u00e0 bient\u00f4t !<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> \u00c0 bient\u00f4t ?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m going to&#8230; do something\u2026.<br \/>\nAlright\u2026.<br \/>\nWell, later!<br \/>\nLater?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After the awkward exchange I made my way to <strong>l&#8217;\u00e9picerie<\/strong> (the grocery store), but on my way home I ran into <strong>mon ami<\/strong> again. With a few <strong>sacs de courses<\/strong> (grocery bags) in hand, I felt I could explain what I couldn\u2019t say earlier.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Salut !<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> Salut John ! Alors, tu as fait quelque chose ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> Ouais\u2026 En fait, je ne savais pas comment on dit faire du shopping mais dans <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/when-are-stores-open-in-france\/\">un magasin<\/a> o\u00f9 on ach\u00e8te de la nourriture.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Un restaurant ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Non, o\u00f9 on ach\u00e8te des l\u00e9gumes, de la viande et de la bi\u00e8re entre autre chose.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Une \u00e9picerie ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Oui c&#8217;est \u00e7a ! J&#8217;allais faire du shopping dans une \u00e9picerie !<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> Faire les courses\u00a0! C\u2019est pour \u00e7a que tu m\u2019as dit \u00ab\u00a0quelque chose\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> Oui c\u2019est \u00e7a\u2026.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>T\u2019inqui\u00e8tes! C\u2019est comme \u00e7a qu\u2019on apprend\u00a0!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hi\u00a0!<br \/>\nHi John\u00a0! So did you do something?<br \/>\nYeah\u2026 Actually, I didn\u2019t know how to say \u201cgo shopping\u201d, but in a store where you buy food.<br \/>\nA restaurant?<br \/>\nNon, where you buy vegetables, meat and beer among other things.<br \/>\nA grocery store?<br \/>\nYes that&#8217;s it! I was going shopping in a grocery strore!<br \/>\nGrocery shopping! That\u2019s why you told me \u201csomething\u201d?<br \/>\nYeah, that\u2019s it&#8230;.<br \/>\nDon\u2019t worry! That\u2019s how you learn!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Between <strong>les rires<\/strong> (the laughter) of <strong>mon ami<\/strong> I made sure to remember <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-vocabulary-shopping-at-the-supermarket\/\"><em><strong>faire les courses<\/strong><\/em><\/a>.
