My early trips to l’\u00e9picerie<\/strong> were an interesting exercise in how much I trusted my French. I took gambles on whether the bottle I was buying was l’assouplissant<\/strong><\/a> (softener) or la lessive<\/strong> (detergent), hoping it wasn’t l’eau de Javel<\/strong> (bleach).<\/p>\n

I haven\u2019t had the luxury of having an apartment<\/a> with un lave-vaisselle <\/strong>(a dishwasher) since I moved to France. Instead I rely on du liquide vaisselle<\/strong> (dish soap) and des \u00e9ponges<\/strong> (sponges). That means looking at many different products that even if I know le mot fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> (the French word), I often don’t know la marque<\/strong> (the brand)!<\/p>\n

Cependant<\/strong> (however), before struggling to realize what the difference between French soap brands are, I had to also learn the vocabulary. The difference between la lessive, le liquide vaisselle et le savon<\/strong> (detergent, dish soap, and hand soap) is very important!<\/p>\n

Luckily I knew how to say faire la vaisselle<\/strong><\/em> (wash dishes) so when I was confusingly staring at the different bottles at l’\u00e9picerie<\/strong><\/a>, I at least knew how to say what I was looking for.<\/p>\n

Excusez-moi monsieur, vous cherchez quelque chose ?<\/strong>
\n Oui\u2026. J\u2019ai besoin du savon pour faire la vaisselle.<\/strong>
\n Vous voulez dire du liquide vaisselle ?<\/strong>
\n Je crois\u2026 oui\u2026<\/strong>
\n Suivez-moi, monsieur, c\u2019est juste ici.<\/strong>
\n D\u2019accord.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Excuse me, sir, are you looking for something\u00a0?
\nYes\u2026 I need soap for washing dishes.
\nDo you mean dish washing soap?
\nI believe so\u2026 yes\u2026
\nFollow me sir, it\u2019s right over here.
\nAlright.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I will admit I was not s\u00fbr \u00e0 cent pour cent <\/strong>(one hundred percent sure) that le liquide vaisselle<\/strong> was the right word. I figured if l\u2019employ\u00e9<\/strong> (the employee) knew it would work with la vaisselle<\/strong> (dirty dishes), it should be the right thing.<\/p>\n

I made my way out of l’\u00e9picerie<\/strong> and when it came time to faire la vaisselle<\/strong> I was relieved to find out that I bought the right kind of soap!<\/p>\n
