But did you know that the word &#8220;blizzard&#8221; is actually a\u00a0loanword&#8211;from English to French?<\/p>\n<p>The exact etymology of &#8220;blizzard&#8221; is unknown, although it was first used in the eighteenth century in Minnesota and it has been claimed to have been of Germanic origin. From the northern United States, the word spread to northern European countries and to France. If you speak of\u00a0<em>un blizzard<\/em> <em>(ble-EZ-ar)<\/em>, in French, you will be understood.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-29156\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/03\/girl-926020_960_720.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"493\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/03\/girl-926020_960_720.jpg 960w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/03\/girl-926020_960_720-350x233.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/03\/girl-926020_960_720-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although you might hear the word\u00a0<em>le blizzard\u00a0<\/em>in French, there are a lot of other words to describe a snowy winter storm. In French, you might also hear about\u00a0<em>une\u00a0temp\u00eate de neige,\u00a0<\/em>which more generally translates as a snow storm, or\u00a0<em>une tourmente de neige.\u00a0<\/em>Both of these words express an accumulation of snow, although not at the intensity and with the sustained winds of a blizzard.<\/p>\n<p>We are anticipating a possible whiteout tomorrow.
