The verb &#8216;<em>briller&#8217;<\/em> means &#8216;<em>to shine, glisten&#8217;.<\/em> <em>Les \u00e9toiles brillent dans le ciel, mais le soleil \u00e9claire la Terre. <\/em>(<em>The stars shine in the sky, but the sun lights up\/illuminates the Earth.)<\/em> Note that as in English, <em>la Terre (Earth)<\/em> with a capital letter is the planet, <em>la terre (earth)<\/em> with a lower case first letter is soil, dirt, earth.<br \/>\n** Note that in French, you do not, as a general rule, use <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-grammar-possessive-adjectives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">possessive adjectives<\/a> with parts of the body. So you would say, for example, &#8216;<em>J&#8217;ai mal \u00e0 la jambe.&#8217; <\/em>to indicate that your leg hurts and not &#8216;<em>J&#8217;ai mal \u00e0 ma jambe.&#8217;<br \/>\n*** <\/em>The verb &#8216;<em>se taire&#8217;<\/em> means &#8216;<em>to keep quiet&#8217;<\/em> or &#8216;<em>to hush up&#8217;<\/em>. It shows up in the less polite and more direct expression &#8216;<em>Tais-toi&#8217;<\/em> which can be interpreted as &#8216;<em>be quiet&#8217; <\/em>but really is closer in practical use to &#8216;<em>shut up!&#8217; <\/em>(You&#8217;ll also hear &#8216;<em>la ferme&#8217;<\/em>, &#8216;<em>shut it!<\/em>&#8216;). The title of a 1958 French film, <em>Sois belle et tais-toi<\/em> (<em>Be beautiful but shut up)<\/em> has, sadly, become an expression of disdain and sexism towards the role of woman in many languages and cultures.<br \/>\n**** Note that while the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.academie-francaise.fr\/questions-de-langue#5_strong-em-accentuation-des-majuscules-em-strong\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acad\u00e9mie fran\u00e7aise is all for<\/a>, the use of accents on capital letters in French is really only required in two situations and you&#8217;ll often see capital letters missing their accents in a whole range of settings and situations. When must you use accents? 1.
