Les nombres<\/a><\/strong> (numbers) are difficult for me to remember in French. If I’m not forgetting the words for chaque nombre <\/strong><\/a>(each number), I’m trying to figure out if we\u2019re talking about four twenties<\/em> or eighty<\/em>!<\/p>\n

I have a hard time remembering les nombres<\/strong> in any language other than ma langue maternelle<\/strong> (my native language). I think it is related to how les nombres<\/strong> lack any context that makes it easier to remember them. It feels like nothing but a list of random vocabulary to memorize!<\/p>\n

It is also frustrating when most of the time numbers are not written out so you can see how they are pronounced. You are much more likely to see 80<\/strong> <\/em>than you are eighty<\/em> or quatre-vingts<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

This only gets worse if you\u2019re dealing with des grands nombres<\/strong><\/a> (large numbers):<\/p>\n

Being able to understand a large string of numbers that sometimes use words milliard<\/strong> and billiard <\/strong>is un casse-t\u00eate <\/strong>(a headache). On top of that une virgule<\/strong> is used instead of un point<\/strong> for the decimal point!<\/p>\n

C’est<\/a> tellement difficile \u00e0 retenir !<\/strong>
\nIt’s so hard to remember!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The solution for me was to find a way to make les nombres<\/strong> so embedded in my brain that I knew them par c\u0153ur<\/strong> (by heart). I wanted to not have to remember<\/em> les nombres<\/strong>, but instead just know<\/em> them.<\/p>\n

In order to have les nombres<\/strong> solidly in my memory I began counting anything I could en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong>. Les pages d’un livre, mes crayons, mes pas, etc<\/strong> (the pages of a book, my pencils, my steps, etc).<\/p>\n

Where I made the most progress was during mon entra\u00eenement matinal<\/strong> (my morning excercise). Compter<\/strong> (counting) would keep my mind distracted and help me practice les nombres en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t easy and I would often get lost, repeat numbers, or skip numbers, especially with the 70s and the 90s:<\/p>\n

Soixante-huit, soixante-neuf\u2026. Euh\u2026 sept\u2026 soixante-dix, soixante-onze…<\/strong>
\nSixty-eight, sixty-nine… uh… seven… seventy, seventy-one…<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

However, the daily practice eventually made it easier to remember les nombres en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong>. I could remember les num\u00e9ros de t\u00e9l\u00e9phone<\/strong><\/a> and follow mes cours de comptabilit\u00e9<\/strong> (my accounting classes) without any problem!<\/p>\n

I wasn\u2019t doing un milliard<\/a> de pompes <\/strong>(a billion push-ups), but the practice made it easier to remember all French numbers!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"
