Licensed under CC BY 2.0.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Holidays celebrating <strong>les m\u00e8res<\/strong> can be traced back to antiquity. <strong>La Gr\u00e8ce antique<\/strong> (Anceint Greece) celebrated <em><strong>Rh\u00e9a<\/strong><\/em>, the mother of <em><strong>Zeus<\/strong><\/em>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/twice-as-nice-with-two-sixes-leap-years-in-french\/\"><strong>la Rome antique<\/strong><\/a> (Ancient Rome) celebrated <em><strong>Matronalia<\/strong><\/em>, <strong>une f\u00eate<\/strong> for <strong>les m\u00e8res<\/strong> in Rome.<\/p>\n<p>In the 15<sup>th<\/sup> century, <strong>les Anglais<\/strong> (the English) started celebrating <em>Mothering Sunday<\/em> <strong>au d\u00e9but du car\u00eame<\/strong> (at the start of Lent) then later <strong>le quatri\u00e8me dimanche du car\u00eame<\/strong> (the fourth Sunday of Lent).<\/p>\n<p>However, <strong>une Am\u00e9ricaine<\/strong>, Anna Jarvis, started the modern holiday in 1908. She was a caring person who pushed for a national holiday celebrating mothers after holding a memorial for <strong>sa m\u00e8re<\/strong>.
