The different dates can be confusing, but the most important thing is not forgetting <strong>les m\u00e8res<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>While modern Mother&#8217;s Day is generally thought to have originated <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/dont-forget-la-fete-des-meres\/\">aux \u00c9tats-Unis<\/a><\/strong>,<strong> le village d\u2019Artas<\/strong> claims to be <strong>le berceau de la f\u00eate des m\u00e8res<\/strong> (the birthplace of Mother\u2019s Day). <strong>Le village <\/strong>held a ceremony in 1906 to honor <strong>les m\u00e8res de familles nombreuses <\/strong>(mothers of big families), giving a prize of <em><strong>\u00ab\u00a0Haut m\u00e9rite maternel\u00a0\u00bb<\/strong><\/em> (High maternal merit) to two mothers of nine children.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-29220\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/05\/baby-feet-1527456_960_720.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"860\" height=\"573\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/05\/baby-feet-1527456_960_720.jpg 960w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/05\/baby-feet-1527456_960_720-350x233.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/05\/baby-feet-1527456_960_720-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 860px) 100vw, 860px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Throughout the first half of the 20th century there were many celebrations that aimed to pay tribute to <strong>les m\u00e8res<\/strong>. One such celebration was <em><strong>la journ\u00e9e des m\u00e8res<\/strong><\/em>, a ceremony held<strong> \u00e0 Lyon <\/strong>in 1918 for all <strong>les m\u00e8res<\/strong> who lost someone in their family during <strong>la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale<\/strong> (the First World War).<\/p>\n<p><strong>La journ\u00e9e des m\u00e8res<\/strong> and the other early Mother&#8217;s Day celebrations <strong>en France<\/strong> were a means of promoting <strong>la politique nataliste<\/strong> (the high birth rate policy) of the time in an attempt to repopulate the country after having lost so many citizens on <strong>les champs de bataille<\/strong> (the battlefield).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Apr\u00e8s la <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/think-you-know-everything-about-the-number-two-in-french-think-again-deuxieme-vs-seconde-more\/\">Seconde<\/a> Guerre mondiale<\/strong> (the Second World War), <strong>la f\u00eate<\/strong> had it&#8217;s date fixed to the last Sunday of May (unless that Sunday is <strong>la Pentec\u00f4te<\/strong>, then it is the first Sunday of June) and became a national holiday with <strong>la loi du 24 mai 1950<\/strong> (the 1950 law of May 24):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>la R\u00e9publique fran\u00e7aise rend officiellement hommage chaque ann\u00e9e aux m\u00e8res fran\u00e7aises au cours d&#8217;une journ\u00e9e consacr\u00e9e \u00e0 la c\u00e9l\u00e9bration de la \u00ab F\u00eate des m\u00e8res \u00bb.<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>The French Republic officially pays tribute to French mothers annually on a day dedicated to the celebration of &#8220;Mother&#8217;s Day&#8221;.<\/em><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Regardless of how it started, everyone takes a moment to remember <strong>les m\u00e8res <\/strong>during<strong> la f\u00eate<\/strong>.
