With le mois de juin<\/strong> (the month of June) almost over thoughts of l’\u00e9t\u00e9<\/strong> (summer) fill the warm air. La canicule<\/strong><\/a> may be on everyone’s mind, but ce mois<\/strong> (this month) is also about la f\u00eate des p\u00e8res<\/strong><\/a> and, bien s\u00fbr<\/strong> (of course), mon anniversaire<\/strong><\/a>!<\/p>\n

Les stores<\/strong> are open<\/a> everywhere to cool things down by letting in la brise<\/strong> (the breeze). La climatisation<\/strong> (air conditioning) is rare en France<\/strong> so you have to make do with les fen\u00eatres ouvertes et les ventilateurs<\/strong> (open windows and fans). While la chaleur<\/strong> (the heat) can make it hard to think of anything else, l’\u00e9t\u00e9<\/strong> also brings happier summer thoughts of le soliel<\/strong> (the sun) and les vacances<\/strong> (vacations).<\/p>\n

Personnellement<\/strong> (personnally), growing up en Floride<\/strong><\/a>, l’\u00e9t\u00e9<\/strong> always makes me think of la saison des ouragans<\/strong> (hurricane season). The change in seasons may be subtle in the sub-tropical state, but the increasing humidity and decreasing tourism are the signs of a Florida summer.<\/p>\n

En France<\/strong>, l’\u00e9t\u00e9<\/strong> is the height of la saison touristique<\/strong> (the tourist season). The colder months of the year<\/a> do not attract as many visitors, but the hot months of l’\u00e9t\u00e9<\/strong> bring in les touristes<\/strong> (tourists) from all over the world to France. It definitely makes it easier to voyager<\/strong> (travel) when you don’t have to worry about packing les v\u00eatements d’hiver<\/strong><\/a>!<\/p>\n

La saison touristique en France<\/strong> always makes me smile, because it is the opposite of what I grew up with. En Floride<\/strong>, the hot summers mark the end of the la saison touristique<\/strong> and the start of les orages<\/strong> (thunderstorms). Chaque apr\u00e8s-midi<\/strong> (every afternoon) the sky turns dark and the sound of thunder fills the humid air.<\/p>\n

Remembering ces orages quotidiens<\/strong> (these daily thunderstorms) doesn’t just remind me of la Floride<\/strong>, but also that la foudre et le tonnerre<\/strong> (lightning and thunder) are somewhat rare en France<\/strong>. It gets very hot and there is even the occasional averse de gr\u00eale<\/strong> (hailstorm), but summer thunderstorms are few and far between.<\/p>\n

This became apparent when I tried to share mon exp\u00e9rience estivale<\/strong> (my summer experience) with mes amis<\/strong> (my friends) in France. They were used to the couple of weeks of la canicule<\/strong><\/a> and la f\u00eate de la musique<\/strong><\/a>, but mes amis<\/strong> had trouble imagining un orage<\/strong> rolling in every day!<\/p>\n
