Les jeux olympiques<\/strong> (the Olympic Games) may soon be held in la ville lumi\u00e8re <\/strong>(the City of Light)! Paris is one of two remaining cities with bids for les Jeux olympiques de 2024,<\/strong> but the official announcement won’t happen until September.<\/p>\n

En septembre<\/strong> (in September) the official location for the 2024 Olympic Games will be chosen during la 131e session du Comit\u00e9 international olympique<\/strong> (the 131st session of the International Olympic Committee) in Lima, Peru. The candidates have come down to two cities: Los Angeles et Paris<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The last time the Olympics were held in Paris was in 1924 which will make it exactly 100 years since les Jeux olympiques d’\u00e9t\u00e9 <\/a><\/strong>(the Summer Olympics) were held in Paris. However, it will not be 100 years since les Jeux olympiques<\/strong> have been in France.<\/p>\n

L’hexagone<\/strong> (litterally the hexagon<\/em>, French term for France) has hosted les Jeux olympiques d’hiver<\/a><\/strong> (the Winter Olympic Games) a few times in the past 100 years, the latest being \u00e0 Albertville en 1992<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The process for choosing la ville h\u00f4te<\/strong> (the host city) is long and starts nearly a decade before the actual Olympics. En juin 23, 2015,<\/strong> Paris officially made its bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics and les Jeux paralympique<\/strong> (the Paralympics).<\/p>\n

Le projet<\/strong> (the project) has developed over the years with several events drawing support for Paris 2024<\/em>. Notably the official logo was unveiled in February 2016 the official slogan being revealed a year later.<\/p>\n

Interestingly there are official slogans in both French and English that have completely different meanings!<\/p>\n

The French slogan is:<\/p>\n

Venez partager<\/strong>
\nCome share<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And the English slogan is:<\/p>\n

Made for sharing
\n<\/em>Fait pour partager<\/strong>
\n<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The fact that the English slogan is heavily promoted created a slight pol\u00e9mique<\/strong><\/a> (controversy), but the idea is to \u00ab\u00a0donner un caract\u00e8re universel au projet<\/strong> \u00bb <\/strong>(give the project a universal character) selon Tony Estanguet, un pr\u00e9sident du comit\u00e9 de candidature <\/strong>(according to Tony Estanguet, a president of the bid committee). <\/span><\/p>\n

There were still complaints about the use of un slogan anglais<\/strong>, but la comit\u00e9 de candidature <\/strong> insisted on un<\/strong> double slogan : un en anglais et un en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> (a double slogan: one in English and one in French).<\/span><\/p>\n

La ville de Paris<\/strong> plans to use over 90% of its existing infrastructure or temporary sites for les Jeux olympiques de 2024<\/strong>. La ville<\/strong> plans to only have to build deux<\/strong> (two) completely new sites: le bassin olympique et la Bercy Arena<\/strong> (the Olympic pool and the Bercy Arena).<\/p>\n

La vote<\/strong> (the vote) au Perou<\/strong> seems to highly favor Paris, with some speculation that Los Angeles is looking to be la ville olympique<\/strong> in 2028 instead. The romantic idea of the 100 year anniversary helps the Paris bid, but the only way to know for sure will be to wait for la vote en septembre<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
