Now that it’s Ao\u00fbt<\/strong><\/a>, le temps<\/strong> (the weather) is getting cooler, but la chaleur d’\u00e9t\u00e9<\/strong> (the summer heat) can still be felt en France<\/strong>. Making it through la canicule<\/a> means more than\u00a0 making sure you have un parapluie<\/strong><\/a> (an umbrella), en fait<\/strong> (in fact) I have un placard<\/strong> (a closet) full of les<\/strong> v\u00eatements d’\u00e9t\u00e9<\/strong> (Summer clothes) that needs to be sorted out chaque \u00e9t\u00e9<\/strong> (every Summer)!<\/p>\n

Being from la Floride<\/a>, ma garde-robe<\/strong> (my wardrobe) did not have les v\u00eatements d’hiver<\/strong><\/a> (the Winter clothes) I needed to survive l’hiver<\/strong> when I first came to France. Heureusement<\/strong> (fortunately), I did have more than enough v\u00eatements d’\u00e9t\u00e9<\/strong> once things started to heat up!<\/p>\n

Cependant<\/strong> (however), I took the opportunity at the start of les soldes d’\u00e9t\u00e9<\/strong><\/a> this year to buy des nouveaux v\u00eatements<\/strong> (some new clothes), specifically les v\u00eatements d’\u00e9t\u00e9<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Une fois<\/strong> au magasin<\/strong><\/a> (once I was at the store), I suddenly realized I didn’t know how to talk les v\u00eatements d’\u00e9t\u00e9 en fran\u00e7ais !<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

I wanted to buy some new shorts<\/em>, sandals<\/em>, and a tank top<\/em>, but when I tried to ask l’employ\u00e9<\/strong><\/a> (the employee) where I could find them, I had trouble even describing what I wanted:<\/p>\n

Excusez-moi, je cherche des v\u00eatements d’\u00e9t\u00e9…\u00a0<\/strong>
\nOui ? Vous cherchez quoi exactement ?\u00a0<\/strong>
\nJe cherche… Je suis d\u00e9sol\u00e9, mais je ne connais pas le mot en fran\u00e7ais… Quelque chose comme le petit pantalon ?\u00a0<\/strong>
\nAlors, on a des pantalons en plusieurs tailles. Vous cherchez quelle taille ?\u00a0<\/strong>
\nNon, ce n’est pas une taille…\u00a0<\/strong>
\nVous cherchez un short, c’est \u00e7a ?\u00a0<\/strong>
\nOui, c’est \u00e7a!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Excuse me, I’m looking for Summer clothes…\u00a0<\/em>
\nYes? What exactly are you looking for?\u00a0<\/em>
\nI’m looking for… I’m sorry, but I don’t know the word in French… Something like little pants?\u00a0<\/em>
\nSo, we have pants in many sizes. What size are you looking for?\u00a0<\/em>
\nNo, it’s not a size…\u00a0<\/em>
\nYou’re looking for shorts, is that it?\u00a0<\/em>
\nYes, that’s it!\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I was surprised to hear that shorts<\/em> are le short<\/strong> in French, but the clumsy conversation helped me learn un nouveau mot<\/strong><\/a> (a new word) and continue shopping<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Malheureusement<\/strong> (unfortunately), I had to go through similar embarrassing questions to figure out how to say sandals<\/em> and tank top<\/em>, but in the end the experience made it much easier to remember the words for les v\u00eatements d’\u00e9t\u00e9<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
