English words that originally come from French can be surprising to people learning la langue fran\u00e7aise<\/strong> (the French language). For many learners you have to be careful not to make any mistakes by thinking in English<\/a> or falling for les faux amis<\/strong><\/a> (false friends).<\/p>\n

L’autre jour<\/a> (the other day), I was Skyping with ma m\u00e8re<\/a><\/strong> and while we were talking she mentioned le d\u00eener<\/strong> (dinner) saying she would be saut\u00e9ing<\/em> the vegetables. I grew up hearing le mot saut\u00e9<\/em><\/strong> (the word saut\u00e9) in English, but did not think about it being un mot fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> (a French word) until I heard ma m\u00e8re<\/a><\/strong> say it out loud!<\/p>\n

It made me curious about le mot<\/strong> and I wanted to find out if it was used the same way en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> or if it was as different as the origin of French fries<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Saut\u00e9<\/strong><\/em> is the past participle of le verbe<\/strong> sauter<\/strong> <\/em>(the verb to jump<\/em>). That means it’s not a part of the present conjugations<\/a> du verbe<\/strong>, but is used for le pass\u00e9 compos\u00e9<\/strong><\/a> and sometimes as un adjectif<\/strong> (an adjective).<\/p>\n

As a reminder, voici les conjugaisons du verbe sauter<\/em> au pr\u00e9sent :\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Je saute\u00a0<\/strong>

*When used as un adjectif<\/strong> le participe pass\u00e9<\/strong> has to agree in number and gender with the noun it is modifying.<\/p>\n

La grammaire <\/strong>may be confusing, but le terme<\/strong> (the term) is easy to understand. Its use in la cuisine<\/strong> (the kitchen) comes from the way that saut\u00e9ing<\/em> involves flipping the food and making it jump! En fran\u00e7ais<\/strong>, it is often used as a noun and refers to un plat<\/strong> (a dish) that is saut\u00e9ed<\/em>.<\/p>\n

There are many English words that come from French<\/a>. It can be fun learning new definitions for words you thought you already knew and it can also make remembering le vocabulaire<\/strong> easier.<\/p>\n
