Licensed under CC BY-ND 2.0.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When I came to France I had to learn about the two important things you have to do with the arrival of the cold months of the year:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>V\u00e9rifier que <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/baby-its-cold-outside-turning-on-the-heat-in-france\/\">le chauffage<\/a> fonctionne<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>V\u00e9rifier que je sais o\u00f9 sont mes <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/invested-in-vetements-winter-clothing-in-french\/\">v\u00eatements d&#8217;hiver<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Make sure the heating works<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Make sure I know where my winter clothes are\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>L&#8217;hiver en France<\/strong> (Winter in France), or at least <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/waves-in-paris-le-metro-is-flooded\/\">\u00e0 Paris<\/a>,<\/strong> is somewhat mild and <strong>la neige<\/strong> (snow) is pretty rare, but that doesn&#8217;t mean it doesn&#8217;t get cold. <strong>Au contraire<\/strong>, <strong>d\u00e8s Septembre<\/strong> (starting from September), the city regularly flirts with temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit).<\/p>\n<p>While there may not be<strong> de la neige, le changement de saison<\/strong> (the change in seasons) is marked by <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/chasing-the-sun-lheure-dhiver\/\">shorter colder days<\/a> and <strong>un manque de soleil<\/strong> (a lack of sun). <strong>En automne<\/strong> (in Autumn), <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/il-fait-chaud-its-hot-in-france\/\"><strong>la canicule<\/strong><\/a> becomes a distant memory as <strong>un ciel nuageux<\/strong> (overcast skies) with intermittent rain becomes the norm.<\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/its-prime-time-open-windows-in-french\/\"><strong>les fen\u00eatres<\/strong><\/a> (the windows) start to close and it gets harder to stay warm, the good news is that <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/heat-and-thunderstorms-warm-thoughts-of-lete\/\"><strong>la saison touristique<\/strong><\/a> (the tourist season) is at an end, making it a good time to visit the more popular attractions if you want to avoid <strong>la foule<\/strong> (the crowd)!<\/p>\n<p>Of course <strong>le temps hivernal<\/strong> also brings up thoughts of <strong>les f\u00eates de fin d&#8217;ann\u00e9e<\/strong> (the end of the year holidays).
