Cette semaine<\/strong> (this week) the weather in Paris<\/a> has been surprisingly good. Le chaleur<\/strong> (the heat) surprised many people and un coll\u00e8gue<\/strong> (a coworker) in turn surprised me with un nouveau mot<\/strong><\/a> (a new word) for the nice weather!<\/p>\n

The idea of surprise heat when the season<\/a> should be getting colder is not something I experienced growing up in la Floride<\/strong><\/a> and as such I never had a word for l’id\u00e9e<\/strong> (the idea).<\/p>\n

Alors<\/strong> (so), when mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong> said that it was un \u00e9t\u00e9 indien<\/strong> <\/em>(an Indian Summer<\/em>) she was surprised to learn that I wasn’t familiar with le terme<\/strong> (the word, the term), puisque<\/strong> (since) it originally comes from l’anglais<\/strong> (English).<\/p>\n

Le terme<\/strong> does in fact come from l’Am\u00e9rique du Nord<\/strong> (North America) and the use of indien<\/em> <\/strong>refers to Native Americans <\/em>and not people from l’Inde<\/strong> (India).<\/p>\n

L’origine<\/strong> (the origin) of le mot <\/strong>is largely unknown, but it could refer to the time when Native Americans would begin to prepare for l’hiver<\/strong> (Winter). Le terme<\/strong> is thought to have spread from la Pennsylvanie<\/strong> north to la nouvelle Angleterre<\/strong> (New England) and onward to le Canada<\/strong><\/a> during the colonial period of the 17th and 18th centuries.<\/p>\n

En passant<\/strong> (incidentally), au Qu\u00e9bec<\/strong><\/a> they use a slightly different mot<\/strong> than en France<\/strong>: L’\u00e9t\u00e9 des indiens<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Alors pourquoi dit-on \u00ab\u00a0un \u00e9t\u00e9 Indien\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> en France ?<\/strong>
\nSo why do people say “un \u00e9t\u00e9 indien” in France?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The last period of warm weather<\/a> before le froid d’hiver<\/strong> (the cold of Winter) is traditionally known as l’\u00e9t\u00e9 de la Saint-Martin<\/strong><\/em> (the Summer of Saint Martin<\/em>) en France<\/strong>. La Saint-Martin<\/strong><\/em> is a holiday on le 11 novembre <\/strong>(November 11th), une date<\/strong> (a date) that is close to the last breath of warm weather.<\/p>\n

“L’\u00e9t\u00e9 indien<\/em>“<\/strong> came from a popular 1975 chanson<\/strong><\/a> (song) by un chanteur fran\u00e7ais originaire des \u00c9tats-Unis<\/strong> (a French singer originally from the United States), Joe Dassin<\/em>. Les paroles<\/strong> (the lyrics) make it clear that le terme<\/strong> comes from l’Am\u00e9rique du nord<\/strong>:<\/p>\n
