{"id":286,"date":"2010-04-09T23:04:10","date_gmt":"2010-04-09T23:04:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/?p=286"},"modified":"2017-10-19T11:37:24","modified_gmt":"2017-10-19T09:37:24","slug":"le-cinema-francais-entre-les-murs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/le-cinema-francais-entre-les-murs\/","title":{"rendered":"Le cin\u00e9ma fran\u00e7ais: Entre les Murs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=t8HWJqgMAhU\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=t8HWJqgMAhU<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Hier soir<\/em> (last night), I stayed up till <em>2h du matin<\/em> (2:00 in the morning!) to finish watching <em>\u201cEntre les murs,\u201d <\/em>a film released in the US as \u201cThe Class.\u201d <em>Normalement, je ne suis pas tr\u00e8s fan du cin\u00e9ma<\/em>\u2014normally, I\u2019m not a big fan of cinema.\u00a0 I get scared easily (\u00ab\u00a0<em>Le Roi Lion\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> <em>m\u2019a fait peur<\/em>\u00a0:\u00a0 \u00ab\u00a0The Lion King\u00a0\u00bb scared me) and I\u2019d rather be outside or talking to someone.<\/p>\n<p>But foreign films show a world I want to learn about. <em>Le cin\u00e9ma fran\u00e7ais<\/em> is probably the best way to start learning how people speak and live without buying a plane ticket. In this post, <em>je vous pr\u00e9sente<\/em> my favorite way to work on <em>le\u00a0langage familier (<\/em>colloquial language)\u00a0: French-language cinema of today, <em>le cin\u00e9ma francophone d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t talk to you about Truffaut or Godard, famous, classic <em>metteurs en sc\u00e8ne <\/em>(directors). If you\u2019re into film, <em>vous les connaissez d\u00e9j\u00e0<\/em>\u00a0; if you don\u2019t already know them, jump on it. I\u2019ve seen like five minutes of Truffaut\u2019s <em>chef d\u2019\u0153uvre <\/em>(masterpiece), <em>\u00ab\u00a0Les 400 coups<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb, and while I liked it, that\u2019s not why I want to watch French movies. I look for the films produced recently, featuring modern stories, language and places.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00ab\u00a0Entre les murs\u00a0\u00bb <\/em>depicts <em>une salle de classe typique<\/em> ( a typical classroom) in a <em>banlieue<\/em> (suburb) of Paris. I won\u2019t give away the story, which is subtly told, posing questions without answering them, but I very highly recommend it.<\/p>\n<p>When I watch French films, I prefer them <em>sous-titr\u00e9s en fran\u00e7ais\u00a0<\/em>: subtitled in French. It makes it easier to follow the conversation and focus on new words and sentences structures. <em>Essayez-le<\/em> (try it)\u2014you\u2019ll be surprised how much you can understand with French <em>sous-titres<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Je pr\u00e9f\u00e8re les films avec des sous-titres en fran\u00e7ais<\/em>, because they hone your listening comprehension. But if you can only find English subtitles, <em>pleurez pas<\/em>\u2014don\u2019t cry. If you listen carefully, you\u2019ll learn new words, alongside their <em>traduction anglaise<\/em>. For example, <em>hier soir <\/em>I learned the word \u00ab<em>p\u00e9tasse<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb (skank).
