{"id":2863,"date":"2010-12-22T13:05:12","date_gmt":"2010-12-22T18:05:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/?p=2863"},"modified":"2017-10-18T11:26:04","modified_gmt":"2017-10-18T09:26:04","slug":"eclipse-lunaire-moon-eclipse-et-solstice-dhiver-winter-solstice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/eclipse-lunaire-moon-eclipse-et-solstice-dhiver-winter-solstice\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00c9clipse lunaire (Moon Eclipse) et Solstice d&#8217;hiver (Winter Solstice)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Pendant que\u00a0j&#8217;<em>\u00e9<\/em>cris ces lignes<\/em> (While I am writing these lines), two natural phenomenons are occurring in the same time <em>dans notre ciel <\/em>(in our sky), and the last time this cosmic coincidence happened, it was almost 400 years ago!<\/p>\n<p>Back then, Europe was still plunged into the so-called\u00a0<em>Guerre de Trente ans<\/em>(Thirty Years&#8217; War); there was no such a thing as <em>les \u00c9tats-Unis d&#8217;Am\u00e9rique <\/em>(though the embryonic concept that would later inspire <em>les P\u00e8res Fondateurs<\/em>, or the Founding Fathers, had already existed then in the form of the Massachusetts Bay Colony); the French King\u00a0<em>Louis XIV<\/em>, the future &#8220;<em>Roi Soleil<\/em>&#8221; who, ironically enough, spent most of his lifetime <em>la t\u00eate dans la lune<\/em>(literally &#8220;his head on the moon&#8221;, as in &#8220;daydreaming&#8221;),\u00a0was a new-born of two months, and Harvard University and <em><a href=\"www.academie-francaise.fr\">l&#8217;Acad\u00e9mie Fran\u00e7aise<\/a> <\/em>were then brand-new enfant institutions!<\/p>\n<p>The first of these phenomenons is a common one, since it happens <em>chaque ann<em>\u00e9<\/em>e <\/em>(every year), and is called <em>le solstice d&#8217;hiver <\/em>(the Winter Solstice in English.)<\/p>\n<p>The <em>solstice d&#8217;hiver <\/em>happens when <em>l&#8217;inclinaison de l&#8217;axe de la Terre <\/em>(the tilt of the Earth&#8217;s axis) is at the farthest point from <em>le Soleil <\/em>(the Sun.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cE8ZpUgP_Lg\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cE8ZpUgP_Lg<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Great explanation of the solstice (<em>Sol=Soleil + stice= station<\/em>) and more <em>en Fran\u00e7ais.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The second phenomenon, less common of course, is the one of <em>l&#8217;\u00e9clipse lunair<\/em><em>e<\/em>, meaning the Moon eclipse.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=w4KOV8frP48\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=w4KOV8frP48<\/a><\/p>\n<p>From here you can understand easily that the <em>\u00e9clipse lunair<\/em>e takes place when <em>les trois plan<em>\u00e8<\/em>tes <\/em>(the three planets) happen to be on <em>la m\u00eame ligne <\/em>(the same line), or at least almost the same one.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s actually special about the moon eclipse is that, unlike <em>l&#8217;\u00e9clipse solaire<\/em>(solar eclipse), you can view it from virtually any point of the Earth&#8212;provided it is at night, of course!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>It is also important to distinguish between two important areas in an\u00a0<em>\u00e9clipse lunair<\/em>e , and that is <em>l&#8217;ombre <\/em>(or the &#8220;umbra&#8221;) and <em>la<\/em> <em>p<\/em><em>\u00e9nombre<\/em> (the &#8220;penombra&#8221;), as you can see from the picture above.<\/p>\n<p>So, <em>pour r<\/em><em>\u00e9capituler<\/em>,\u00a0these two phenomenons, the <em>solstice d&#8217;hiver<\/em>and <em>l&#8217;<em>\u00e9clipse lunaire<\/em><\/em> did not occur in the same time since 1638, and such coincidence will not happen again before the 21st of December,\u00a02094!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>* Quelques mots-cl\u00e9s<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <em>Le \u00a0Soleil<\/em>: The Sun<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8211; La Lune: <\/em>The Moon<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8211; Solstice d&#8217;hiver<\/em>: Winter solstice<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8211; \u00c9clipse lunaire: <\/em>Moon eclipse<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <em>L&#8217;ombre: <\/em>(Literally &#8220;the shadow&#8221;)The umbra<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <em>La p\u00e9nombre<\/em>: the penumbra<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<img width=\"300\" height=\"133\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2010\/12\/Lunar_Eclipse_DiagramS_Fr.gif\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image tmp-hide-img\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><p>Pendant que\u00a0j&#8217;\u00e9cris ces lignes (While I am writing these lines), two natural phenomenons are occurring in the same time dans notre ciel (in our sky), and the last time this cosmic coincidence happened, it was almost 400 years ago!
