Licensed under CC BY 2.0.<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Il \u00e9tait une fois, dans un royaume lointain&#8230;\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Once upon a time, in a faraway kingdom\u2026\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This familiar phrase immediately brings up thoughts of <strong>les contes de f\u00e9es<\/strong> and other fantasy stories like <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/bon-anniversaire-harry-harry-potter-terms-in-french\/\">Harry Potter<\/a>. The common themes of <strong>les contes de f\u00e9es<\/strong> that begin with <em><strong>il \u00e9tait une fois<\/strong> <\/em>are magical creatures and old kings and knights from stories everyone remembers loving as kids.<\/p>\n<p>Many <strong>contes de f\u00e9es<\/strong> include <strong>un <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/gotta-catch-em-all-pokemon-names-in-french\/\">monstre<\/a><\/strong> (a monster) that is not necessarily magical, but still very scary. However, even if the protagonist needs help from <strong>une f\u00e9e marraine<\/strong> (a fairy god mother) or a righteous king, most of the time everyone knows how <strong>l&#8217;histoire<\/strong> (the story) ends:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Ils vecurent heureux et eu beaucoup d&#8217;enfants.<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>They lived happily ever after. (litterally: they lived happily and had many children.)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In <em><strong>Le Petit Chaperon rouge<\/strong>, <\/em>it&#8217;s the famous <strong>grand m\u00e9chant loup<\/strong> (big bad wolf) that is <strong>le monstre du conte de f\u00e9es<\/strong>. Not only does <strong>le loup<\/strong> blow down the house of <em><strong>Les Trois Petits Cochons<\/strong><\/em> (The Three Little Pigs), he also eats <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/celebrating-mothers-day-in-france\/\">la grande-m\u00e8re<\/a> du Petit Chaperon rouge<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a lot of fun to learn how to talk about <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/quels-sont-vos-livres-preferes\/\"><strong>les contes de f\u00e9es<\/strong><\/a> we all heard growing up!
