License under CC BY-SA 2.0.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It may take a while for some people to wake up, but everyone has <strong>une routine du matin<\/strong> (a morning routine) that involves things like <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/counting-in-french-helped-me-remember-les-nombres\/\"><strong>l&#8217;entaientment matinal<\/strong><\/a> (morning exercise), <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/going-to-le-dentiste-in-french\/\"><strong>se brosser les dents<\/strong><\/a> (brushing your teeth), and of course, <strong>le petit d\u00e9jeuner<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, even though it may not look like it, the French<strong><em> petit d\u00e9jeuner<\/em> <\/strong>has a similar <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/the-origin-of-lordinateur-computers-in-french\/\">origin<\/a> to the English word:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Petit d\u00e9jeuner\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Breakfast\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The word derives from <em><strong>jeuner<\/strong> <\/em>meaning <em>to fast<\/em> (as in to not eat for a period of time) and adding the <em><strong>d\u00e9-<\/strong> <\/em>prefix gives it the opposite meaning. That gives <em><strong>d\u00e9jeuner<\/strong><\/em> the definition of <em>ending the fast<\/em> or <em>breaking the fast<\/em>, similar to the English term, <em>break-fast<\/em>. It&#8217;s also important to remember that without the <em><strong>petit<\/strong><\/em>, the word becomes <em>lunch<\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>D\u00e9jeuner<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Lunch<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>En France<\/strong>, <em><strong>le petit d\u00e9jeuner<\/strong> <\/em>features pastries like <strong>le croissant, le beignet, la cr\u00eape<\/strong> and of course <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/pain-au-chocolat-a-pastry-delight\/\"><strong>le pain au chocolat <\/strong><\/a>(without getting into the big debate over <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-regional-variants\/\"><strong>la chocolatine<\/strong><\/a>) and is usually accompanied by <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/a-cup-of-coffee-un-cafe-sil-vous-plait\/\"><strong>un caf\u00e9<\/strong><\/a>, but some people prefer <strong>du th\u00e9<\/strong> (tea), <strong>une infusion<\/strong> (herbal tea), or <strong>du jus<\/strong> (juice) instead.<\/p>\n<p>No matter what you eat, <strong>la routine du matin<\/strong> that goes along with <strong>le petit d\u00e9jeuner<\/strong> can set the mood for the entire day.
