At the height of its colonial power, France had colonies from Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, to the Caribbean and the new world, and into large parts of Africa. Many of those former colonies make up what is known today as <b>la francophonie<\/b>* and continue to contribute to French culture around the world.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-29520\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/01\/512px-LocationMali.svg_-350x175.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/01\/512px-LocationMali.svg_-350x175.png 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/01\/512px-LocationMali.svg_.png 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A French colony until its independence in 1960, Mali, located in north west Africa, is one of the continent&#8217;s largest countries.\u00a0 This week we look at three related culture highlights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Malick Sidibe<\/strong><br \/>\nA new exhibit at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondationcartier.com\/#\/en\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Fondation Cartier pour l&#8217;art contemporain <\/b><\/a>(<i>Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art \u2026 <\/i>yes, that Cartier!) features <b>des photographies<\/b>** (<i>photographs)<\/i> taken by this Malian artist \/ photographer that capture the French- (and American-) influenced youth culture of the recently liberated capital Bamako***. Both blind, they have still enjoyed a successful global career that includes performances with some of the world&#8217;s top bands. You can listen to a great interview with them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pri.org\/stories\/2017-09-14\/live-studio-amadou-mariam-kurt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> and enjoy some of their songs on their official Youtube channel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/amadouandmariam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bal de Bamako<br \/>\n<\/strong>As Amadou &amp; Mariam tell us,<b> &#8220;<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/GRMiEe685w0?t=52s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>le dimanche \u00e0 Bamako, c&#8217;est le jour du mariage\u2026<\/b><\/a><b>&#8221; <\/b>(<i>Sundays in Bamako are wedding days). <\/i>More generally, Sundays are for celebrating. And this song from French singer Matthieu Chedid**** that I discovered during<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/a-perfect-trip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> my trip to France<\/a> last summer seems like a perfect &#8216;party song&#8217; to celebrate the new year and the on-going contributions of France&#8217;s former colonies to the world heritage that is <b>la francophonie.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"-M-, Toumani &amp; Sidiki Diabat\u00e9 - Bal de Bamako ft. Fatoumata Diawara, Oxmo Puccino\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/E0fKM2XMgpE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>* Of course some of those former colonies are still part of France today. <i>Les fameux d\u00e9partements et territoires d&#8217;outre mer (<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/when-is-france-just-ask-dom-and-tom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>les DOM et TOM<\/i><\/a><i>) \/ over-seas departments and territories <\/i>are as French as France. The French word <i>photographe<\/i> is a false friend. <i>Photographe<\/i> in French means <i>photographer. <\/i>The word for <i>a photograph<\/i> (<i>a picutre, <\/i>in other words, as opposed to the person who took it) is either <i>une photographie<\/i> or more commonly <i>une photo.<\/i> The word <i>photographie<\/i> can also mean <i>photography<\/i> (the act\/art of making photos).<br \/>\n*** Bamako has been estimated to be one of the fastest growing cities in the world (and the fastest growing in Africa).<br \/>\n**** Matthieu Chedid, who performs under the name -M-, is a child of north Africa\/the Middle East himself.
