Licensed under CC BY 2.0.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I recently had to deal with <strong>un tuyau bouch\u00e9<\/strong> (a clogged pipe) in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/fixing-my-french-internet-wi-fi-out-of-la-box\/\"><strong>mon nouvel apartement<\/strong><\/a> (my new apartment), and while cleaning up the initial <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/waves-in-paris-le-metro-is-flooded\/\">flooding<\/a> was annoying, learning all the new words related to <strong>les tuyaux<\/strong> (pipes) made me realize something about the English word <em>plumber<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Ever since I first saw the periodic table, I was confused by how the elemental symbol for <em>lead<\/em> was <em>Pb<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29549\" style=\"width: 110px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29549\" class=\"wp-image-29549 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/01\/lead-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"150\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-29549\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image by John Bauer.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I vaguely remember learning that it had something to do with <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/calendrier-de-lavent-waiting-for-christmas-in-french\/\"><strong>le latin<\/strong><\/a>, but when I was <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/22614-2\/\"><strong>au coll\u00e8ge<\/strong><\/a> (in middle school), I didn&#8217;t care too much and just memorized the symbol for <strong>l&#8217;examen<\/strong> (the test).<\/p>\n<p>When it came time to hire <strong>un plombier<\/strong> (a plumber) those middle school memories came back to me as I noticed how both the English and French words are based on <strong>le plomb<\/strong> (lead).<\/p>\n<p>This connection with <strong>le plomb<\/strong> not only made the periodic symbol instantly make more sense, but also shows a bit of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/twice-as-nice-with-two-sixes-leap-years-in-french\/\">Roman history<\/a> of <strong>la langue <\/strong>(the language)!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Un plombier<\/strong> <strong>est quelqu&#8217;un qui travaille le plombe <\/strong>!<br \/>\n<em>A plumber is someone who works on lead!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s been a long time since <strong>le plomb<\/strong> was used for <strong>les tuyaux<\/strong>, but it&#8217;s cool to see how history hides itself in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/the-origin-of-lordinateur-computers-in-french\/\">the origin of words<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Voici un vocabulaire des tuyaux :\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29550\" style=\"width: 169px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29550\" class=\"size-full wp-image-29550\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/01\/2641114440_10c56bdefd_m.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"159\" height=\"240\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-29550\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image by Dwilliams851 on Flickr.
