Learning des nouvelles expressions<\/a><\/strong> (new expressions) is always a mix of confusion and fun. It’s fun finding new and creative ways to say something, but it can also be incredibly frustrating when you hear something and have no idea what it means.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even if you know every word in la phrase<\/strong> (the sentence), it’s easy to have no idea what they mean in une expression<\/strong>! If you’re in the classroom<\/a> or chez soi<\/strong> (at home) it’s not a big deal, but sometimes when I’m au bureau<\/strong><\/a> (at work), mes coll\u00e8gues<\/strong> (my coworkers) will use une expression<\/strong> while explaining something related to work!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Un exemple r\u00e9cent<\/strong> (a recent example), is une expression<\/strong> that uses the word boucle<\/strong> <\/em>twice to mean two different things. Mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong> held a meeting to faire le point<\/strong><\/em><\/a> after the end of a project and said something I didn’t understand:
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

On a boucl\u00e9 la boucle.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I only knew la boucle<\/strong> <\/em>as the word for buckle<\/em> and because I was stuck thinking in English<\/a>, I couldn’t figure out what mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong> was trying to say!\u00a0<\/span>My wrong interpretation of l\u2019expression<\/strong>, while funny, did not help me understand la phrase<\/strong>:
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

We buckled the buckle.\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Fortunately, mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong> could see how confused I was and quickly said something they were sure I would understand:
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

C’est termin\u00e9 !<\/strong>
\nIt’s finished!\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That helped me understand the meaning of l’expression<\/strong>, but I was honestly still confused. Une fois chez moi<\/strong> (once I was home) I looked up l’expression<\/strong> and found out that la boucle<\/strong> <\/em>is more than a buckle<\/em> and boucler<\/strong> <\/em>is more than to buckle<\/em>!

When I found l\u2019\u00e9quivalent anglais<\/strong> (the English equivalent) of l’expression<\/strong><\/a>, j’ai boucl\u00e9 la boucle<\/strong><\/em> !\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
