These sounds, though, are portrayed differently in our spoken languages.<\/p>\n<p>Over the new year holiday, I went on a cruise with my friend and her family. At some point, my friend and her brother were teasing their Russian stepmother over something she&#8217;d said in the past about what roosters say. She took it in stride and said the Russian animal noise again: <strong>\u043a\u0443\u043a\u0430\u0440\u0435\u043a\u0443<\/strong> (kukareku). As a French speaker, I know French roosters in the provincial countryside scream <strong>cocorico<\/strong> in the mornings, so to me it wasn&#8217;t so odd.<\/p>\n<p>I later had a (very adult looking) conversation with a French friend discussing a few animal noises and verbs I wasn&#8217;t familiar with. Our bleating, screeching, and mooing have produced the following list. Memorize them and take yourself to the nearest French zoo for a fun, animalistic conversation!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>Le chien &#8211; dog<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<strong>Que fait le chien ? Le chien fait ouaf ouaf !<\/strong> (What does the dog say? The dog says woof woof!)<br \/>\nVerbs for dog sounds: <strong>aboyer<\/strong> (bark), <strong>grogner<\/strong> (growl), <strong>hurler<\/strong> (howl), <strong>and<\/strong> japper (yips).<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Le chat &#8211; cat<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Que fait le chat ? Le chat fait miaou !<\/strong> (What does the cat say? The cat meows!)<br \/>\nVerbs for cat sounds: <strong>miauler<\/strong> (meow) and <strong>ronronner<\/strong> (purr).<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">La poule &#8211; chicken<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Que fait la poule ? La poule fait cotcotcodet !<\/strong> (The chicken goes bock bock bock!)<br \/>\nChicks (les poussins) in French say <strong>piou-piou.<\/strong><br \/>\nVerbs for chicken sounds: <strong>caqueter<\/strong> (cluck).<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Le coq &#8211; rooster<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Que fait le coq ? Le coq fait cocorico !<\/strong> (What does a rooster say? The rooster says cock-a-doodle-do!)<br \/>\nVerbs for rooster sounds: <strong>chanter<\/strong> (here, to crow)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Le corbeau &#8211; crow<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Que fait le corbeau ? Le corbeau fait cr\u00f4a cr\u00f4a !<\/strong> (What does the crow say? Caw caw!)<br \/>\nVerbs for crow sounds: <strong>croasser<\/strong> (to crow)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Le pigeon &#8211; pigeon<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Que fait le pigeon ? Le pigeon fait rou rou !<\/strong> (What doe the pigeon say? Coo coo!)<br \/>\nVerbs for pigeon sounds: <strong>roucouler<\/strong> (to coo)<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">L&#8217;oiseau &#8211; bird<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Que dit l&#8217;oiseau ? L\u2019\u00e2ne fait hi-han !<\/strong> (What does the donkey say? Hee-haw!)<br \/>\nVerbs for donkey sounds: <strong>braire<\/strong> (to bray)<br \/>\nFun French tip: Have trouble remembering the order of both <strong>y<\/strong> and <strong>en<\/strong> in a sentence? Remember what the donkey says: <strong>y en !<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Le lion &#8211; lion<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Que fait le lion ? Le lion fait raoh !<\/strong> (What does a lion say?
