Don’t be afraid of making mistakes when you speak French! Not knowing how to say simple words like mattress<\/em><\/a> or shorts<\/a><\/em> have put me in some strange situations, but if I had been too afraid to speak, I would never have learned les nouveaux mots<\/strong> (the new words) at all!<\/p>\n

Between looking at someone dans les yeux<\/strong><\/a> (in the eyes) and learning the importance of\u00a0l’eau<\/strong><\/a> (water), I’ve learned a lot au caf\u00e9<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Another fun experience learning new words au caf\u00e9<\/strong> happened when I was out with mon ami<\/strong> (my friend) and wanted to buy them a drink as a friendly gesture. I wasn’t s\u00fbr \u00e0 cent pour cent <\/strong>(one hundred percent sure) and ended up thinking in English<\/a> as I smiled at mon ami<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

Je t’ach\u00e8te un verre !\u00a0<\/strong>
\nD’accord… pourquoi ?\u00a0<\/strong>
\nTu es mon ami, donc je veux t’acheter un verre !\u00a0<\/strong>
\nPourquoi pas !\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I’ll buy you a glass!\u00a0<\/em>
\nOkay… why?\u00a0<\/em>
\nYou are my friend, so I want to buy you a glass!\u00a0<\/em>
\nWhy not!\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Mon ami<\/strong> was nice enough to play along even if he didn’t really understand what I wanted to say. When le barman<\/strong> (the bartender) came over and I placed an order, mon ami<\/strong> immediately understood what I originally tried to say.<\/p>\n

Aaah ! Tu voulais dire que tu veux me payer un verre !\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Aaah! You wanted to say that you want to buy me a glass!\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It was my turn to be confused because it sounded like he pretty much said exactly the same thing, only using the word payer<\/strong> (to pay)<\/em> instead of acheter<\/strong> (to buy)<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Alors, c’est quoi la diff\u00e9rence entre ce que tu viens de dire et ce que j’ai dit ?\u00a0<\/strong>
\nSi tu dis que tu vas m’acheter un verre, \u00e7a veut dire que tu vas vraiment m’acheter un verre et pas la boisson !\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

So, what’s the difference between what you just said and what I said?\u00a0<\/em>
\nIf you say that you’re buying me a glass, that means you are going to really buy me a glass and not the drink!\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I quickly understood my mistake<\/a> and realized how funny my original statement must have sounded to mon ami<\/strong>. The difference between payer un verre<\/strong> <\/em>and acheter un verre<\/strong> <\/em>has since stuck with me, but that wasn’t the last time a small error<\/a> made my French sound strange!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"
