There are a number of notable passing and other news updates that I thought would be good to share this week. Some are happy, some sad, but all are making waves on the French airwaves over the last few weeks.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-29617 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/01\/Flooding-1024x576.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/01\/Flooding-1024x576.gif 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/01\/Flooding-350x197.gif 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/01\/Flooding-768x432.gif 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Paris sous l&#8217;eau<\/strong> (<em>Paris beneath the waters)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Paris (and many parts of France) has seen record levels of rain over the last weeks. As a result, the Seine river, which flows through the heart of the city, has overflowed it&#8217;s banks.\u00a0<strong>Les quais de la Seine<\/strong> (<em>The quais along the river)\u00a0<\/em>are submerged and river traffic (including the famous Bateaux Mouches and the newer <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/a-perfect-trip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Batobus)<\/a> has come to a halt. On a walk through the city this past weekend <strong>mon beau-fr\u00e8re<\/strong> (<em>my brother-in-law)<\/em> took the pictures above showing just how high the water has risen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Passings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Janvier fut un triste mois <\/strong>(<em>January was a sad month)<\/em> not just because of the <strong>la<\/strong> <strong>pluie<\/strong> (<em>rain), <\/em>but also because two giants of French culture left us this month. <strong>La chanteuse<\/strong> (<em>singer) <\/em>France Gall died on January 7. Known for such hits as <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/ella-elle-la\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ella, elle l&#8217;a<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/the-french-circus-of-the-poupee-de-cire-wax-doll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poup\u00e9e de cire, poup\u00e9e de son<\/a>, Gall&#8217;s career spanned more than 30 years from <strong>les ann\u00e9es soixantes <\/strong>(<em>the 60&#8217;s)<\/em> to the mid 90&#8217;s. In addition to her pop hits, Gall won the 1965 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/frances-2015-eurovision-submission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eurovision<\/a> competition (representing Luxembourg) and starred in the 1970&#8217;s era rock opera <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/a-little-song-and-dance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Starmania<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"France Gall - Poup\u00e9e de cire, poup\u00e9e de son - Eurovision 1965 - Luxembourg - Winner\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7cv9NIzGmSI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>January 20th was marked for many by the death of Paul Bocuse, one of France&#8217;s most famous chefs. Bocuse, who gave his name to the annual <strong>Bocuse d&#8217;or <\/strong>(<em>the golden Bocuse)<\/em> cooking competition, was known throughout France and the world not only for his own cooking but for training some of the best chef&#8217;s alive today.<\/p>\n<div class=\"woo-sc-box  normal   \">A passing of a different kind<\/p>\n<p>Rain isn&#8217;t the only wild weather to strike France of late. On January 1st, a violent wind storm blew across the country with enough force to topple <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/green-france\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>un \u00e9olienne<\/strong> in Brittany.<\/a><\/div>\n<p><strong>Speaking of Eurovision <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m a late comer to this European song competition. It was never something my French family paid much attention to. And while the finals are still months away, I did happen to see that France held their finals this weekend and selected their entry for the annual European song competition. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/12-points-for-france-how-did-france-do-in-the-2018-eurovision-song-contest\/comment-page-1\/#comment-804821\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Josh <\/a>has made it an annual tradition to feature France&#8217;s song in a spring post, so I won&#8217;t steal his thunder.
