Everyone knows the French love to eat. But they also love to drink. John’s recent post<\/a> on sharing a drink with friends got me thinking about vocabulary for drinks<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Commen\u00e7ons avec un peu de vocabulaire<\/strong> (Let’s begin with a little vocabulary)<\/em><\/p>\n

Quand j’ai* soif, je bois.<\/strong> (When I’m thirsty, I drink). The<\/em> verb for to drink<\/em> is boire. Boire <\/strong>is an irregular verb conjucated** in the pressent tense as:<\/p>\n

je bois, tu bois, il\/elle\/on boit, nous buvons, vous buvez, ils\/elles boivent<\/em><\/div>\n

My go-to beverage on a hot day in France is the Diabolo menthe<\/strong><\/a>. But there are lots of other choices. Here are the French words for some common boissons<\/strong> (drinks).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\t\n\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t

^ Be sure to pay attention to the two different constructions here so you know the difference between a glass of something<\/em> vs. a glass made for drinking that same thing<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Continuons avec une petite histoire<\/strong> (Let’s continue with a little story)<\/em><\/p>\n

When we arrived in France for our vacation this summer, ma belle-fille<\/strong> (my step-daughter) <\/em>Anne kindly left us a basket of local treats to tide us over until we could faire les courses<\/strong> (go shopping)<\/em>. Along with the panier<\/strong> (basket) <\/em>of cr\u00eapes, p\u00e2t\u00e9s, fromages, pain, et jambon<\/strong> (crepes, pates, cheeses, bread, and ham)<\/em>, she also left us quelques boissons – de l’eau, du vin, de la bi\u00e8re, du cidre, et … Breizh Cola.<\/strong> Breizh (the Breton*** word for Brittany) Cola was created in 2002 by deux amis<\/strong> (two friends)<\/em>. Aux aires de Coca-Cola<\/strong> (With an air of Coke)<\/em>, this “Cola du Phare Ouest<\/strong>” (the name of the company and a play on “far west”; un phare<\/em> is a lighthouse and the phrase Il \u00e9tait une fois dans l’ouest . . . \/Once upon a time in the west . . . <\/em>evokes tales of the old cowboys and indians of the American West) has become a top selling soda in France.<\/p>\n
