Licensed under CC0.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When I first asked <strong>un francophone<\/strong> (a French speaking person) how to say the word <em>&#8220;pet&#8221;<\/em> <strong>en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong>, they immediately started laughing.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Comment dit-on <em>&#8220;pet&#8221;<\/em> en fran\u00e7ais ?<br \/>\nQuoi ?! Hahaha !<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>How do you say &#8220;pet&#8221; in French?<br \/>\nWhat?! Hahaha!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s an example of how <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/sorry-for-the-time\/\">thinking in French<\/a> can cause <strong>les francophones<\/strong> to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/have-you-ever-mixed-up-there-their-and-theyre\/\">make mistakes<\/a> in English.<strong> Le rire<\/strong> (the laugher) came from the fact that there is a particular juvenile word <strong>en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> that sounds exactly like the English word <em>&#8220;pet&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Tu veux vraiment dire un pet&#8230;. comme le gaz intestinal ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Non ! Pas de tout ! Je parlais des animaux.<br \/>\nJe ne comprends pas alors.<br \/>\nLes animaux qui sont nos amis&#8230;.<br \/>\nLes animaux de compagnie ?<br \/>\nOui, je crois que c&#8217;est \u00e7a !<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>You really mean to say a fart&#8230; like intestinal gas?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>No! Not at all! I was talking about animals.<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t think I understand then.<br \/>\nThe animals who are our friends&#8230;.<br \/>\nPets?<br \/>\nYes, I think that&#8217;s it!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><strong>Un pet<\/strong><\/em>, to be clear, is <em>a fart<\/em> in French and <em><strong>un animal de compagnie<\/strong> <\/em>is <em>a pet<\/em> in English. To make the somewhat long <em><strong>animal de compagnie<\/strong> <\/em>easier to remember, just think of its <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/handfuls-of-hands-common-gestures-in-french\/\">literal translation<\/a> and the word should stick in your head.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Un animal de compagnie<\/strong> &#8211; <em>A companion animal<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Figuring out how to talk about <strong>le meilleur ami de l&#8217;homme<\/strong> (man&#8217;s best friend) and all your favorite animals may involve an awkward conversation if you don&#8217;t already know the French word.
