After <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-grammar-the-recent-past\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>le pass\u00e9 r\u00e9cent<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-grammar-back-to-the-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>le futur proche<\/strong><\/a>, it&#8217;s time this week to look at the French tense known as <strong>l&#8217;imparfait<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-30044\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/03\/books-book-pages-read-literature-159866-350x235.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/03\/books-book-pages-read-literature-159866-350x235.jpeg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/03\/books-book-pages-read-literature-159866.jpeg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>L&#8217;Imparfait<\/strong> (<em>The imperfect)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Like <strong>le pass\u00e9 compos\u00e9, le pass\u00e9 simple, <\/strong> and the <strong>pass\u00e9 r\u00e9cent<\/strong>, <strong>l&#8217;imparfait <\/strong>is a tense for talking about things that happened in the past. It differs from those other past tenses though. The <strong>imparfait<\/strong> isn&#8217;t used for actions that just happened once in past, it is used for (1) on-going or incompleted actions in the past, (2) habitual actions in the past, and (3) descriptions of things like feelings and the weather in the past.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Forming l&#8217;imparfait<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>L&#8217;imparfait <\/strong>is a relatively easy verb tense to learn because all verbs (except for one!) are formed the same way. To form the <strong>imparfait:<br \/>\n<\/strong>begin with the present tense &#8216;<em>nous&#8217; <\/em>form of the verb (the one that ends in &#8211;<em>ons)<br \/>\n&#8211; <\/em>remove that &#8211;<em>ons<br \/>\n<\/em>+ and add the proper ending from the following list:<br \/>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-6\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-6 aligncenter\">\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><b>Je<\/b><\/td><td class=\"column-2\"><b>-ais<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><b>Tu<\/b><\/td><td class=\"column-2\"><b>-ais<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-3\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><b>Il\/elle\/on<\/b><\/td><td class=\"column-2\"><b>-ait<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-4\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><b>Nous<\/b><\/td><td class=\"column-2\"><b>-ions<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-5\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><b>Vous<\/b><\/td><td class=\"column-2\"><b>-iez<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-6\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><b>Ils\/elles<\/b><\/td><td class=\"column-2\"><b>-aient<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-6 from cache --><\/p>\n<p>The one exception to this rule? On-going or incomplete actions in the past<\/strong><br \/>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-8\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-8 aligncenter\">\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><b>Je regardais la t\u00e9l\u00e9 lorsque mon p\u00e8re est rentr\u00e9.<\/b> <div style=\"color:red;font-weight:bold;\">Requested file could not be found (error code 404). You can combine the imparfait with the construction of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-grammar-the-recent-past\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>pass\u00e9 r\u00e9cent <\/em><\/a>to talk about two things that happened in the past, one right before the other.
