Learning des nouveaux mots<\/a><\/strong> (new words) in French means remembering a word’s definition, pronunciation, and le genre du mot<\/strong> (the gender of the word). For many people including myself, remembering les genres des mots<\/strong> is the hardest part of learning the language!<\/p>\n

Malheureusement<\/strong> (unfortunately), as un anglophone<\/strong> (an English speaker) the idea of every word having un genre<\/strong><\/a> is incredibly hard to accept. The distinctions are random and even though there are some general patterns, most of the time knowing le genre d’un mot<\/strong> means relying on your memory and making mistakes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It can be difficult to understand how messing up le genre<\/strong> sounds wrong when the actual word itself was still said correctly, but it’s important to understand how it’s a mistake that really sticks out to les francophones<\/a><\/strong> (French speakers).<\/p>\n

Something that helped me appreciate how getting le genre<\/strong> right can cause a misunderstanding was finding a similar idea en anglais<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

Je veux acheter un chaise.<\/strong>
\nUn chaise… tu veux dire une chaise ?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I want to buy an chair.<\/em>
\nAn chair… you mean a chair?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Saying “an chair”<\/em> instead of “a chair”<\/em> isn’t a perfect comparison, because le genre<\/strong><\/a> isn’t really a thing you have to worry about in English. There’s no need to remember if “a chair”<\/em> is masculin<\/strong> or f\u00e9minin<\/strong>, but the fact that “une chaise”<\/em><\/strong> is f\u00e9minine<\/strong> is a very important part of la grammaire fran\u00e7aise<\/a> <\/strong>(and not le grammaire fran\u00e7ais<\/em> like I accidentally typed while writing this post)!<\/p>\n

Cependant<\/strong> (however), the difference between “a”<\/em> and “an”<\/em> provides a way for les anglophones<\/strong> like myself to feel the importance of such a small thing. The English example makes it easy to understand how “an chair”<\/em> is not only grammatically incorrect, but also simply sounds strange.<\/p>\n

Developing that same intuitive feeling for French takes a very long time, but seeing why it matters definitely helps the process. Keep that in mind the next time you accidentally say “un chaise”<\/em> or “la jour<\/a>“<\/em> by mistake<\/a>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"
